According to the ticker, Pinot tried to get in the break. Obviously the other podium contenders' teams chased him down. With Pinot doing a job for teammate Demare, other would-be escapees may have been discouraged.

People here were moaning about other teams helping Giant after Kittel won 3 stages in the first week. Since then, Kittel won zero stages, Greipel one and Kristoff two. So yes, it's possible.

My guess is that they'll drop off the front once they reach the flat part of the stage in the middle. They just want to keep the pace up over the hilly opening parts.
