gee lot's of defintive judgements here... To me there are things we shouldn't forget :
- Contador gained 3 seconds in the last 80 meters, but he never got any separation during the climb. It tells me that yes Nibali had reached the limit but also that when they had almost reached the line he let go psychologically "ouf I followed him, nothing significant happened. Contador still has 2'30 to make up, so the road ahead is very very long ! And remember, beyond all that talk of "this climb didn't suit x or y"m this type of series of short steep climb is where separation is the easiest to achieve. on 6,5 or 7% Chamrouse or Risoul, draft plays a bigger role... Contador will have to keep gnawing, but today tells me that it is still very open either way (which as a fan i love !)
- Weather, weather, weather. can't stress this enough guys. this weather is hideous and will last 2 more days. We simply cannot predict what days of cold and rain will do to rest and recuperation in the 2 very long weeks ahead. We could see riders looking good today falling like flies with a flu or cold as soon as monday/ the alps, of just have an empty tank suddenly in the pyrenees. The other way round too : I can for example a guy like valverde suffering but being the best of the bunch in the pyrenes and nabbing that podium spot.
- Time gaps ! by monday evening the 10th should be almost 5 minutes back and probably a wee bit more than 20 riders within 10 minutes... that's before the 5 high mountain stages (the first 3 being easyish, but still!).

few other observations :
- As many have noted, porte looks like one of the 3 best riders, but the question with him remains whether he can sustain that 3 weeks.
- Falls, falls, falls. It continues and with **** weather tomorrow as well, they will keep taking their tall in minutes, but also in energy sapped. It has happened to many riders, top guys could still suffer from it...
- battle for white jersey : as a frenchman I am happy to see Pinot and Bardet doing well. I don't believe in Kwiat so I look forward to the french boys battling it out.

It takes a day or two for some to get their climbing legs on so i wouldn't read too much into todays stage. It was however imperative for Porte to strut his stuff today and his performance will inspire Sky to rally round him.
As for Contador`s three seconds, they did next to nothing to alter the time gap between the two team leaders, we will have to see just how mentaly strong Nibbles is in the days ahead. This race may yet be decided in the head rather than the legs.

it must be good to have such knowledge of how Nibali felts in the last few meters. Did you get a chance to speak to him about it after the race?

Question to those of you who think Nibali could have followed Contador but just decided not to bother: Why on Earth would Nibali not go full speed in the final 100 metres?

I am actually dead serious.

I was dead serious. Porte will smash it in the high mountains. Maybe Contador can stay with him some of the time but then he will get crushed by three minutes in the time trial. Also Porte is already ahead. This prospect makes me miss Froome because no one is less fun than Richie Porte.

Contador won't lose 3 minutes to anybody in the TT. In 2011 TDF with Giro and Crashes in his legs he lost only 1 minute to Martin and Evans.

That maps well to how it looked on TV.

Weird ride by Contador with all the looking around. Every couple seconds, left and right. No, for those who claim he was asking Nibali to work, that just didn't happen.

I thought Nibali defended very well. Much riding left. Today was at best a draw for Contador, but in fact he's gotta be disappointed he didn't get more time.

Nibali looks very, very good.

I disagree, Carols described it well, can't remember it exactly but the point is that Nibali was breathing quite hard, looked spent and Contador looked very fresh.

What I saw was that once Contador accelerated, Nibali couldn't follow. Whether that was to do with gear issues or not, we'll never know. I do know Nibali didn't look too strong to me. We'll know more on Monday.

AC thought he was going to the stage win, so slow down and prepare for the final sprint. How stupid is his sport director? LOL

"I thought I was going to win the stage, that's why I eased a little as I prepared for the sprint to the finish, but then I looked up as the line was coming and saw that it said the gap was two minutes. That's when I realised there was still someone ahead of us."

Yeah, I'm sure his DS told him he could win the stage. FFS

I thought it was funny that Alberto said " when I saw I couldn't win anymore I decided to take a couple of seconds on Nibali" :D

Why would AC ease at all when he is 2.34 behind - even if he did think he was winning the stage? That makes no sense. Contador needs every second he can find if he wants to win this TDF.

I guess he thought he was the first one on the road, the stupid sports director did not relate race information to him

it's a little technic some use when preparing to sprint: you ease up as you get ready, baiting the guy behind you just a little, watching if he is going to make the jump. Even uphill there is an advantage in starting the sprint from behind. However, Nibali was in no shape to sprint or decided not to. instead of arriving together, that gave Alberto a few seconds

Yes but even if he was first one on the road he should still be pushing for every possible second as he is 2.34 behind. That is what I don't get about this "easing up" thing.

who knows ? afraid Nibali or Porte took the energy, so save a little bit energy for the final sprint? I really don't know, the way he rode the last part is just bizarre.

you looking at it as a GC matter that is why you don't get it. This was a question of "who " was going to win the stage. Contador rode to win it until her realized somebody had already done it. There is not time to gain in a sprint. it's totally amazing that he actually even got 3 seconds. this was a scenario for Nibali/contador finishing 1 and 2 in a sprint uphill unil for some reason, which will be clear later, Nibali did not go for the sprint

make sense, Nibbles also had a gear issue
