Matthews had to back out of it completely, it looked like he might have won it if Bouhanni had stayed on his line and not veered left.

I was thinking the same thing. Not sure Matthews had enough space left to come completely around him, but Bouhanni's move definitely ensured he wouldn't come around him by making him stop his sprint early.

Yeah he moved over. He still would have won straight on, but considering the complaining he's done, then he does that. If roles reversed, he would be whining.

I'm not sure he would have won. But anyway he took away Matthews chance to beat him. And as a whiner he should get a correction.

Great stage. All the favorites super attentive, except for Nairo. He had all the luck of the world that Degenkolb and Giant were also caught up. Otherwise he would have lost time.

I don't see him winning this Vuelta against Froome. He doesn't look like his usual self.

Mathews wouldnt have won. Too much ground to make up in not enough road.

Doesnt alter that it was a dangerous move Bouhanni that would have caused a crash if Mathews hadnt evaded it. Bouhanni should be DQ

Orica complained and the judges were watching for a while at replays of the sprint but finally they decided Bouhani's win to stand.

One could say he learned his lesson : if you don't want to have the door shut in front of you, ride in front. Since his team isn't strong enough most of the time to give him a proper leadout till the end, he took the risk and launched early, surprising most of his rivals (not Matthews though). His wave is the epitomy of a **** move that's for sure.
