Who are paying for the MTF/MTT at Corones? There isn't really anything up there. Is there a town nearby who picks up the bill?
it's the ski station up there who pays. At least it was like that in the past years
EDIT: and ofc part of the bill is payed by Sudtirol as whole region.

well if the rumours are true this ain't an easy Giro by any means. Even without '90s style mountain stages.

Easier for Nibali (if he starts) than otherwise, I meant. Contador definitely suffered the most in the - relatively brutal - queen stage of the last Giro he won, even though no one was close to his overall level. I think the route matters more to an uber dominant rider who aims for a Giro-Tour double. The absence of a brutal mountain stage or two could help Nibali keep some freshness for the Tour, if he can resist the urge to go too deep too often.

Yeah, the ski station has a huge amount of money. Paying the bill for a Giro stage is a better way to use our money that all the other useless stuff (airport, ect.) that get huge financial support by our region...

I wonder if there will be any traditional high mountain stage at all.

Best chance might be the Mortirolo stage. One could do this, for example: map, profile. Again i am not sure if i have located Forte Sertoli correctly. There is nothing there really, just a small road through the wood.

I think it's a little before the point you picked, on a side road which is not shown on the map. But it's near enough anyway.

It's that one. But the road to get there starts on the west, only the beginning is marked but you can clearly see the line of the trees.

I think a stage finish on Finestre is impossible, but your Aosta - Sestriere is amazing.

I did not really think a Finestre finish was possible. As far as the rest of the route you don't have to do the San Carlo climb which would make the route easier if only slightly shorter. I would be amazed if it was done though, it is just too long.

The length/difficulty is less the problem. The bigger issue is going to 2770m on Iseran.

Looking at the map fauneria linked to in post 154 he seems to have started climbing the Mortirolo from just north of Grosio before descending back to Grosio and then going to Mazzo to do the Mortirolo from there.

Snow in May?
Yes that would be a problem that I did not even think about.

Based on the last couple of years, you shouldn't rely too much upon stages with 2500m+ mountains in the Giro. Better with stages with somewhat lower mountains that aren't that vulnerable to bad weather.

Yes, it's Mortirolo from Grosio (first 9 km), then descending back to the valley on a small road just west of the Grosio road. All on tarmac, all on Streetview. It would be better the other way round, though. The small road should be the climb, the road to Grosiu the descent. There are plenty of interesting roads there that are not on Streetview; i wonder how many of them are tarmaced.

Edit: map of that climb.
