Again no Fauniera? Cervinia is boring.

This.

If the route follows these rumours, that will mean (after some quick research) all MTFs bar Plan de Corones will be under 6% (ie Abetone, Madonna di Campiglio, Cervinia, Sestriere)... could have a 2012 snoozefest on our hands again. (Of course dependent on who's racing etc)

Speaking of Madonna di Campiglio, isn't that the one from the 99 Giro? Carrying on with last year's Pantani theme?

except that before Abetone may come Pradaccio, before Cervinia St.Panthaleon, before Aprica Mortirolo, before Sestriere Finestre... As things stand Madonna di Campiglio is the only weak finish.

New rumours:
- MTF to Abetone looks pretty much confirmed. Still unclear whether they'll climb the Pradaccio or something else.
- Stage 15 will be a MTF to Madonna di Campiglio, then rest day, then the Mortirolo stage.
- Stage finish in Imola (I mean at the famous Autodromo) after a hilly route, in the end of the first week OR the start of the second (stage 8/10)
- Sorgenti del Piave looks definitely dropped.

So here's my new prediction for the route (with uncertanty shown with * number):
* -> guessed
***** -> official

Stage 1: San Lorenzo a Mare – Sanremo TTT *****
Stage 2: Albenga - Genova *****
Stage 3: Sestri Levante - La Spezia *****
Stage 4: Forte dei Marmi - Abetone MTF ****
Stage 5: Montecatini Terme – Castiglione della Pescaia ***
Stage 6: ??? - ???
Stage 7: ??? - ???
Stage 8: Torre del Greco - Termoli ***
Stage 9: ??? - Ceglie Messapica **
rest
Stage 10: ??? - Imola ***
Stage 11: Imola - Vicenza ***
Stage 12: Treviso - Jesolo OR Belluno - Feltre (both ITT) ****
Stage 13: ??? - Nervesa della Battaglia ***
Stage 14: ??? - Plan de Corones MTF **
Stage 15: ??? - Madonna di Campiglio MTF ****
rest
Stage 16: ??? - Aprica OR Tirano (with Mortirolo from Mazzo) ****
Stage 17: ??? - Lugano **
Stage 18: Lugano - Verbania ****
Stage 19: ??? - Cervinia OR S.Anna di Vinadio (likely the former) MTF ****
Stage 20: ??? - Sestriere (with Finestre) MTF ****
Stage 21: Torino - Milano ****

NOTE:
- There must be another TT somewhere. No clue where.
- Since Mortirolo is on stage 16, I'm sure one between Cervinia and S.Anna has been dropped, also considering that the stage to Verbania is rumoured to be Alpe Segletta descent finish.
- Torre del Greco is at the foot of the Vesuvius...

Normal MTF on Plan de Corones? Oh boy, with the boring Madonna di Campiglio stage and a rest day after it they could do an awesome stage in the dolomites with multiple hard climbs, maybe something like a reverse version of this stage with a finish on Plan the Corones :)

WITHOUT TZE CORE, IT IS NOTHING

(Ideal world: Tze Core, St Panthaléon, descent finish in Châtillon. Alternative: Tze Core-Champremier-St Panthaléon-Cervinia)

***Updates***
- 8th stage to finish in S.Giorgio del Sannio (hilly stage)
- 9th stage to start from Benevento (but I really doubt it will finish in Ceglie Messapica as formerly rumoured... a flat stage on Sunday is quite unlikely)
- The ITT in Veneto could go from and to everywhere, there have been at least 5 rumoured routes already :D
- Forget about Fauniera
- Stage 16 to finish in Tirano, with maybe a few kms uphill road (unlike the 2008 finish)
- Stage 18 to start in Bellinzona
- Stage 19 to start in Gravellona Toce
- Official presentation in a month. October 6th.

I like finestre stage a lot, otoh I dont like overusing of mortirolo :(

edit: and cervinia? lol

5 years. 2010 - 2015. I don't think it's too much. It's a beautiful climb which makes more differences than Zoncolan, which shouldn't be used that often.

A lot of 10-15 % but only few parts 15-20 %. 10-15 % is ideal to destroy the race in a positive way. Plus the combination hard climb - soft climb makes sure that the race is done on the penultimate climb ( Sestrières 2011 only exception because of GC decided) and the riders arrive alone or max with 2-3 other riders on the foot of the last, softer climb, which then makes another brutal difference - because the riders are completely exhausted and have to push the big gears on Aprica or Sestrières.

Why is everyone forgetting we got Mortirolo in 2012. It sucked cause the final climb was too long and too far away
Actually it made for some epic racing with De Gendt taking the podium with a bold move. But yeah I see your point when we take into account 2010 with the stage finishing in Aprica and Arroyo going balistic on the descent.

Mortirolo is used every 2 years at Giro from 2004,with this kind of pace it will be Alpe d huez of Giri, which is rather embarrasing for this great climb

Stage 19 looks to be going through the same area as stage 14 of the 2014 route.

Would they be using the same climbs, Alpe Noveis, Beilmonte and Oropa before going to Cervinia?
What other climbs could they put in the route?

it's not the same area at all. Like 100 kms north.
Before Cervinia is very likely to have the Colle di Saint-Panthaleon, and before that, nobody knows. They could climb either the Col du Joux like in 2012 or the Col Tzecore (the latter would be definitely better)

I am sorry if I have got it wrong, I do not know much about that area at all, hence the question. I was thinking they would be heading south from Gravellona Toce towards Borgesesia then they could do the climbs mentioned towards Ivrea, although not that far, then up the valley to Chatillon, perhaps via the Col du Joux and up to Cervinia. By the sounds of what you are saying that is totally wrong way they will be going. I do not know where the climbs you are talking about are. I will try and find them on a map.

They will probably go through Biella, no?

As a matter of theory, they can climb Bielmonte and Noveis, but they would be totally irrelevant as they are too far from the finish. In addition they would lenghten the route a lot. It's far more likely they'll go through main roads at least up until Verres, where they'll either head east to climb Joux or Tzecore, or north if they wanna take the shortest route. The Saint-Panthaleon starts a few kms west of Chatillon, in a village named Chambave. It heads north and connects to the climb to Cervinia at Antey-Saint Andre, 19 kms to the top.

So, now it looks like the highlights of the Giro could be:

Abetone via San Pellegrino in Alpe
Plan di Corones
Aprica via Mortirolo
Sestriere via Finestre

Rather easy MTFs. except Corones, but tough climbs before that. What I miss is at multiple mountain stage like the ones to Tre Cime in 2007 and 2013 and Val di Fassa in 2011.

Btw, does anyone (Eshnar) know if it's possible to have at MTF other than Aprica directly after Mortirolo? For example Monte Padrio or Monte Colmo. Is it realistic to have at MTF here or at another climb near Edolo?
