Knees and Sky should have stopped.
They have, but in an ideal world, they shouldn't, as the barrier was up for them. Trains are explicitly acknowledged as just an accepted variable in a race, but you can't have the guys that didn't break the rules be left behind unless you do kick out the guys who crossed anyway.

Was I the only scared of the possibilty of a collision between the train and a rider?

No, you're not. There are some serious morons in the peloton today.

Well half the bunch made it through before the barriers came down, it's the guys crossing once the barriers came down that should be punished.

I read an interview with Gouvenou (the race director) this week in Velo Mag and he said his worst nightmare is the train schedules....

There was only about 10 seconds or so between last rider crossing the rails and train coming through. Crazy dangerous.

Thomas doing what has unfortunately become what he does best in the Classics... looking great then crashing in the biggest events.

I thought the barriers were already coming down when the first riders passed. May be wrong though, will have to see it again. In that case whoever was on the front should have taken responsibility and stopped, but then I admit it's easy to say that from behind a keyboard.

i suppose they let it slide....

They shouldn't let it slide. If they do then riders will continue to do it in future races - until one of them gets hit by a train.

It's one of the most important rules there is in terms of rider safety.
