Today's stage will get what it deserves. Has there ever been a stage that included four major climbs designed so badly ?

Those valleys of 20-30km in between mountains really do not motivate long range attacks from GC riders.
The only thing these mountains do is make it hard to control and hurt the legs a bit more before the final climb.

Only by sending domestiques up the road from teams like Tinkoff and Movistar something could happen, but they didn't. Only Izagirre, but that's more precaution then a plan to attack early.

hadn't seen this profile yet, but that makes a mockery of the super short alpine stages in this TdF. 138 km and 6 climbs!

Yes, together with the Vuelta organization. They wanted a hard mountain stage in Andorra and they asked Purito, who lives there for many years now, which climbs and route they could use.

This stage has exactly the same route as a 'La Purito', a one-day tour for bikeriders (children, adults) which Purito will organize at the end of this year.

The Yates could be waiting for somewhere like Mende or Gap, the punchier finishes.

Three riders down as being off the back today (Dowsett, Dempster, van Bilsen). The flat ground in between the climbs makes things extra tough if you are behind the autobus as you don't have the benefit of a large chaingang or the sprinters teams trying to limit their losses. The stage to PdB in 2011 was the one where Cav got dropped very early and barely made the time cut. I think a few guys at the back that day must have been happy that they could ride with him and have his team-mates driving on the front.
