With the nature of the final three stages, Dan Martin must be favourite.

Lol how so?

Martin is by far the most likely of the top 5 in GC to pick up bonus seconds on the remaining stages. Do you still have De Clercq as favourite (he definitely has a good chance of retaining the lead)?

Without that big turn from Kiriyenka Porte would not have caught up with Contador....looks like Contador just wanted test his legs for the last time before Giro

You know that's not true. Contador was struggling (and couldn't catch TJ) by the time Porte reached Kiryienka's wheel. He'd fired all of his bullets with the earlier attack whereas Porte saved his final one for the decisive moment of the climb.

no interest in a pissing match. that said: i don't think contador was struggling. he did what he had to do, didn't work out. perhaps you do not or cannot understand/see in front of your eyes that contador was ISOLATED most of the l;ast climb whereas porte had THREE teammates with him.

If you look when Contador passed Kiri Porte was just 5 seconds behind and closing, he'd have caught him anyway.

Nah, I don't think so. But with Sky and BMC well represented I think he possibly hesitated going too early with TJ to then not risk being worked over by these teams. Or perhaps he just f-kd up?

Martin and Kelderman caught Contador.

And then Porte, no? The point I was trying to make was that Contador was in a very bad position (with no teammates!) against some very tough opponents, on not ideal terrain and didn't have quite the strength to reel back TJ and definitively drop Porte, at which point he was at great risk to loose time to some of his opponents. In fact that's what happened.

I thought your point was that without Kiryienka, Porte would not have caught Contador, which is obviously not true.

But if it was something else, then I apologize.

Contador needed a teammate like Rafa in good form to take some of the work in controlling the attacks, reeling them in. The team needs to be stronger.

Dear Fans @tinkoff_saxo, I assure you that team will be stronger than ever this season. We're Super TEAM, and minus1 won't change nothing

No my point was this, that Porte may have been able to catch Contador without Kiryienka, but with the extra effort that would have cost him I doubt he would have dropped the Spaniard by 5 secs.

At the same time if Contador had his Kiryienka today then I cannot see Porte gaining any time on him today and harbor the suspicion that the Spaniard may have even been able to win the stage.

OR...an IUE (isolated uphill exasperation) similar to froome's puffer, though contador's IUE would be a compact, high pressure oil sprayer. uci and wada rules allow this after an isolated rider has attacked a minimum of two times, only to have a stronger team's riders pace his (contador's) rival(s) back to await contador's next attack.

sounds like a plan to me!

nice couple of days for Danielson
Yeah, but it's a little bit strage to see him on the attack in a race like this, normally you're used to see him climb well on really steep climbs at high altitude with hot weather

I think this will be a major blow for Rolland's confidence. I think any thoughts he had of a major GT win/podium look miles away.
He just does not seem to be able to recover as well as others.

tbh Rolland has his good and bad races. The fact he was in an breakaway the first day suggests he isn't at the best of his form imo.
He will do fine at the next GT he rides in. I don't see him on a podium of an GT anyways, allthough he was mighty close last Giro.
