2015 Vuelta Stage 17 : Burgos - Burgos ITT 39 km

WIth Degenkolb, Mezgec and Waeytens, Giant have sprinters who could snatch boni's during the stage. Those downhill finishes are going to be interesting though.

Landa is a loose canon. Not a team player that one......

Interesting point, he must have soft pedalled today, but was he saving his effort to help Aru or himself? he could have a bearing on this GC.

Doesn't really matter. He's never going to win a GT when he time trials like that and only attacks in the last km in the mountains. Great rider who's amazing to watch - especially in the hilly classics - but his skillset just isn't quite right for winning GTs.

Let's see:
Tomorrow - cat 1 with 13km descent to finish to get back on
Friday - big gradual cat 2 with another descent but 2km uphill finish
Saturday - four cat 1s with another descent finish but a very very short kick up at the line

I think Dumoulin has a chance

Yeah, good point. He could have gained at least 10s-15s more with Landa's help.

Didn't even need the extra time, if Aru won the stage he'd have got 4 more bonus seconds and be in red...

What happened: one of the worlds best TT riders smashed the TT on a course well suited to him and Aru simply rode a good GC TT like he can do.

Not much extraordinary happened today. And we end up with a few thriling final days.

Normally when TTers gain climbing skill, they lose some of their TT skill, so it was quite surprising to see him go so well.

The difference now is that Astana know it is a direct head to head with Dumoulin. Before they had to worry about Rodriguez, Majka, Quintana, Froome, Valverde etc... so were wary about how hard to ride.

They'll surely now go flat out to really test him on the climbs early in the day; get him isolated and then either attack him on the last climb or set Aru up to sprint for bonus seconds.

Dumoulin's best chance may be to go on the offensive and attack himself, but the big problems there are that Landa is so strong and that Dumoulin is a slightly dodgy descender.

I think Aru just won the Vuelta. He surely will find these 3 seconds somewhere on 1 mountain and 2 hilly stages.

But dumoulin best on small steep hills? He'll drop Aru on both, and probably on the mountain stage too for good measure

Dumoulin won't drop Aru on the short finish tomorrow. Thats for sure. The Real challenge is on the second to last stage.

If one really awesome thing could happen this Vuelta it should be Purito going for a long range attack on stage 20 and go out in a blaze of glory.

Not gonna happen. But fun to think about.

What has he got to lose? Unless he's content with getting another GT podium. He will end up regretting it after his career is finished if he doesn't try something.

Aru will probably try to win the stage and red tomorrow or on Friday, already.

Landa might be allowed to jump into the final breakaway for anotger stage win on Saturday, then.

Fair enough, but he was asked to speak English, and nearly every other rider interviewed spoke English.
But whatever, bit of a pointless topic
