I wonder who's idea it was and why they even did it. It's dumb to close a gap of 1 minute only to get 10 minutes penalty or get disqualified.
Well yes, getting caught is dumb.

Vino's, obviously. Thinks he can do whatever the hell he wants.

Update: They're planning to DQ Nibali but Astana is asking for leniency: 10 minutes penalty instead of Nibali going home.

He should be DQ:ed if you ask me. Would leave a bad taste if he goes on to win a stage later on. He will mess up the dynamics of the race since "he should not have been there" much like Contador did in the 2011 Giro.

Just my 2 cents.

Source?

Multiple reports from Spanish related media on twitter, lost track of them. Sorry.

yeah the teamcar obviously called into Kazachstan to ask what they should do in the middle of the race

When you've been getting away with cheating for this long you're ability to estimate the risk gets a bit skewed.

Couldn't watch today. Can anyone explain why Aru wasn't able to dispatch the tired Tour riders? He seems to have finished behind most of them, except good old Nibali.
Aru was also involved in the crash, his shorts were cut on his left hip, don't know if it affected him

I'd be fine with that. He probably shouldn't get a chance to contest GC, but that would keep a big name in and allow him to animate the race and go for stage wins.

Amazing how you see it so differently. For me Quintana looked weak. No way that Quintana on top form would have even made that attack, let alone then get dropped and blow up in the last km.

Indeed. Quintana was rather weak. The strongest were Purito and Froome (especially him). Landa also good. These 3 guys look the best atm.

If Bala is really good, he will always try to win on a finish like this. He just isn't that good at the moment. And it's illogical to think he will peak in the hardest mountain stages. Likely he will lose more time there to the likes of Froome and Landa. He always loses time in the big mountain stages.
As far as we know, Quintana was the only one strong enough to attack today. And even though he rode solo for a long time he still beat all of the favorites except Rodriguez.

And got dropped by Chaves, Roche and Dumoulin. Strange logic...

I agree with this. Hugo, do you think Froome, Purito, Bala, Aru, etc...would have also been dropped by Roche and Dumoulin?
They were all dropped by Roche and Dumoulin. And Quintana dropped them all as well. I think that Quintana just paced himself - just like Froome usually does. He never got a big gap and he was never caught (except for by Rodriguez) so clearly he didn't blow up. You think that Froome, Purito, Bala, Aru etc. just let Quintana go? No, they couldn't follow him.

You mean Mendrisio? That was one race. What else are you talking about?

I think it's a pretty unique situation. Most hanging on to team cars happens at the back of the peloton, to stay inside the time limit. They're cheating to stay in the race. Nibali was cheating not to lose time.

Don't know exactly what's in the rulebook, but I think if you kick Nibali out, you should kick the DS out as well

When I wrote "10 minutes time penalty" I was making a hyperbole to point out the magnitude of the impudence, didn't think anyone would say it seriously.

Half the posters in this thread asking for a DQ is such a ridiculous claim i feel the need to 'spam'
What's so bad or ridiculous about people asking for the rules to be enforced no matter how big the fish?

read the rules then. 10" for the first offence in a stage race.

page 13 of the disciplins and procedures

eliminiation only after multiple offences in the same race.
LOL.

If that was true Quintana would be the Tour winner by now.

Offences have their limit too. Otherwise I can hold on for a minute and gain 5 minutes and get a 10" penalty because is my first offence.

I agree totally, there have to be ramifications for the team as it takes two to tango.

I'm a Nibali fan, but rules are rules. He did something idiotic, tried to cheat, disqualification is deserved.

I think a multiple minute time penalty is appropriate, a DQ from the race definitely isn't. I mean, he didn't gain any advantage for the upcoming stages or whatever by doing what he did, nor did he put the safety of other riders in danger.

It was a more general "you" meaning cycling teams as whole as there have been occasions when obvious hanging on to cars was not punished, but yeah it's only the second time IIRC that Nibali was caught cheating this way.
