As a time trialist, I was pulling for Tom to pull it out but the writing was on the wall during other stages that there would be a day with a substantial loss. It's just heartbreaking that it's on what is essentially the last stage.

Did it need to be Astana though?

Majka very clever ride and now is going towards third
Amazing performance of Plaza (on his own for 60km)
Aru and Astana won the Vuelta
Purito????? did he fell asleep?
sorry for TD but in one day he went from GC to out of top 5
Great great great stage

You have to wonder now; if Dumoulin hadn't made that massive effort at the end of yesterday, would he have had the little bit more strength needed to close the gap when he got within 10 seconds.

Probably would have been dropped anyway on the last climb, but might have saved his podium if he had got back on.

I don't think you can call it bad day, maybe pay day or just a day in the mountains

You remember when everyone wrote that Quintana's best day will be the Andorra stage? Well if we simply calculate he would have won it without that day :D (although I ofc. know that the whole situation would have been different and that Aru would have chased him, today)
