2015 Vuelta stage 9: Torrevieja > Cumbre del Sol 168.3km

I just rewatched the final climb, apart from Froome and Dumoulin, everyone just rode incredibly stupid, sprinting up the first steep part, then at a flatter section they just waited for Froome to close a 10s+ gap really calmly, whilst they had gone in the red. Then they did it again in the penultimate km. Froome did the same, only he waited at the finish

"Hey lets wait for Froome so he can drop us because we wasted all our energy sprinting on the steep sections"

Overall victory probably is a tall order, you're right, but he'll put minutes in climbers in the itt, so why not dream big?
I really can see him fighting for the top 10 from where he's now.
Dumoulin is not interested in a top 10 in a GT. He really isn't. Only podium or winning would keep him trying. If he's outside of a shot on the podium he'll drop purposely and save strength for the ITT.
This guy is a winner, or at least somebody only interested in winning. He's way different from Gesink and Mollema etc

That might be his mentality, but his team won't want him to deliberately sabotage, say, a sixth place. And his agent would take a pretty dim view of it too, given that if he adds "legitimate fringe GC man" to his impressive resume, it will up his already considerable market value a little.

It is easy to say that nowthat, but if Froome is not well the best is to put the maximun time on him by attacking from the begining

The other day, not very step, so easy to follow wheel, people said they forgiben Froome but not attacking from far.

The best way is to get a gap and then time trial your way up. They didn't do that

In defence of the others there are still so many riders in with a realistic chance of winning the race its unsurprising they are looking around at each other, also I don't think anyone truly knows what sort of form they are in. This of course plays into Froome's hands who just rides his won race.

I just watched the final climb and wtf? no you don't get what I mean, I mean WTF
No no seriously I mean WHAT THE ACTUAL F***
Valverde attacks at the beginning of a climb. Froome falls back after the first attack and does a yoyo froome. Aru, Quintana, Majka, Dumoulin,... attack until they let Dumoulin go. Froome suddenly goes alien mode and attacks on a super steep section, dropping aru, majka and quintana only purito can follow and Dumoulin is still up the road. They catch him, Purito attacks but froome can follow and drops everyone until the guy who is a TT specialist for years, a climber for a week and an uphill sprinter for...well since exactly that moment, because he returns to froome and drops him on the final 100 meters. Is there any word to describe this? Yes it actually is and it is: VUELTA

However I am not sure if froome will still be that good on other mountain stages because we already saw that he is in good shape on short but steep climbs. The only point were he lost time so far was the one single long mtf.

I thought I'd seen it all when Froome dropped Purito on 15% gradients, then Tommy D drops Froome :D What the actual hell

Apparently there is no climb that does not suit Froome.

He's always been good on 15% type stuff, I don't know where the fallacy that he isn't came from.

From the same people who say he can't descend, can't handle a bike, can't stay upright on cobbles, etc etc.

Always?

That's definitely the wrong adverb to use..or do you want Giro 2009 link.. :D

Just watched this. How I love the Vuelta! More often than not it winds up being my fave GT of the year.

Mad props to Dumo - I didn't think he had it in him! Just about everyone took a shot - Dumo, Bala, Nairo, Aru, Chaves, Roche, Froome, Majka, Purito...and he winds up on top. Amazing ride by him.

I still truly have no idea who's going to win this thing. It wouldn't shock me at all if anybody in the top 10 lost 2 minutes on the next big mountain stage. It also wouldn't shock me if any of those same guys put 20-30 seconds on the field instead.

Quintana doesn't love the heat. He performs best in some light drizzle and cold. So I hope for that type of weather at Andorra.

All contenders bar Froome, Rodriguez and Dumoulin rode a bit silly. It was clear from the first ascend that you shouldn't race against each other on this climb, but just make sure you get up in the fastest possible pace as this thing was too steep to profit from slipstream... so why thye marked each other and with accellerations all-over... beyond my comprehension.

It is widely assumed La Vuelta is usually the most exciting GT of the year. For a couple reasons:

1) By being the "lesser" GT in comparison to Giro, and even more so the Tour, all the usual uptight approach are gone and teams and riders are more eager to take bigger risks. It isnt the end of the world if riders blows up. This is how the sport used to look like before major sponsors and coperation got involved in the biz. Regardless of the route and this late in the season Vuelta can offer true racing.

2) It attracts two types of riders: those who have already done the Tour and Giro or those who want to find their legs before the WC road race. In both cases their form are somewhat uncertain at the point of the race. Still the big boys want to shine because for their own sake and reputation and the crit riders are forced to try if they are very off the programme. This is why we see many ups and downs making it very exciting for the viewer.

3) It always has and will always be a organised chaos.

So at the moment, you have to say Dumoulin can win this Vuelta! WTF!!!

Froome now suddently big candidate too, with Quintana. Nairo looks really solid too.

Bala just not that good. I said it a couple of times already this Vuelta. He will not win this race. Podium will be difficult too.

I hope Purito can still win a stage. Legs are good, but today just two guys who where a bit better. Top-5 however will be difficult. Froome, Majka, Aru, Quintana and maybe Dumoulin will finish ahead of him.

So Quintana, who barely managed to beat Valverde (they have him although wrong on the same time) who also lost ground is now suddenly a big favorite for the overall while Valverde will have difficult to even podium?

You are a utter joke and i doesnt do your boy Purito any favors.

Quintana finished 8 seconds ahead of Valverde on a finish which suits Valverde more than Quintana, which means that Quintaba is clearly in decent shape, and Bala less so. Quintana is a better climber than Bala and if Valverde is losing time, quite a lot of time, on these finishes to Purito (which is still normal), Froome (still Ok), Aru (not ok) and Majka then it means he us not in good shape.

I wouldn't say Nairo is suddenly a contender though, he has been there since the beginning.

Aru looks good. Not a finish that suited him at all, way too steep, and did pretty well. Majka too, and the TT will help him getting that 3rd spot, as he is better than Nairo, Pozzovivo, Aru, Purito in a TT. Pozzovivo is disappointing me a bit, isn't as strong as I'd hoped.

You are a utter joke. Or just really frustrating person in life. I'm sorry for you.

Bala just didn't grab many boni's on the finishes he likes. And he's just a class below Quintana in the real mountain stages. If Quintana is in shape, which he is, he can win multiple minutes on Bala in Andorra/Ermita stage. For the moment, he's just as good as Valverde on finishes which suits Valverde.

And Froome is also a better GC contender. And Aru, Majka are looking solid and are fresher. So of course Bala will have difficulty finish on the podium.

One of the most stupid post i have ever seen. Without any arguments either

From a guy who in Puritos decline felt he had to turn his attention to degrading Valverdes legacy i take this as a compliment. You just deserved to hear the truth and dont blame it on me. Blame the universe.

Just imagine if it was Purito who was involved in a crash and needed X-ray afterwards you would be the first person spamming, crying and reminding everyone about it. No such acceptable excuses for Bala ey? For your narrative you had to "elegantly avoid" it so his stage would look bad for his resume.

Quintana didnt yesterday do a shyte better then he previous have shown this Vuelta that either mark him as "a clear overall favorite" or indeed if he would lose it. I´d say it is still a questionmark. But you imagine this also in your hope of having Bala slaving for the guy the rest of the Tour. This unhealthy obsession with Valverde? Have you considered taking medical expertise for it?

Of course you´d figured it was a stupid post. The point was to direct it at you and your pathetic bias.

Wow people happy Froome lost after that perfomance.

Getting greedy, do we! :) Leaving everything else aside, the way he completely ignored the flow of the race early on the climb only to come back later and sprint past everybody on the steep ramps in the last km, is the textbook example of powermeter-based racing, which has even more haters here than Froome and Sky themselves.

Nothing can possibly have more haters than Froome and Sky on this forum :p

Objection. Levi Leipheimer.

I think I dislike Universal Sports even more than Levi for promoting his grand fondo while at the same time employing those to jagoffs Schlanger and Gogolski who shamelessly defamed Quintana on air immediately after his performance in hilly time trial a couple of years ago. Levi's advertised as this great champion. Quintana never received an apology from these two pantywaists nor from Universal Sports.

Sky and Froome are next on my list of least favorite parts of cycling. Levi's up there though.
