After yesterday's stage Modolo said he was with the Chaves group on top of Mendelpass and that he feels great climbing legs so he would give today's stage a shot. Don't know if he believes he can do it from the break,

I'm tipping Domont if the break survives.

The stage is 240km long and they can easily have as much as 10-15 minutes before they hit the first difficult climb if nobody is chasing them on flat. The best climbers out of this break are surely not going to lose that much in the last 30 kms.

Apparently Kruijswijk said this morning:
"Het wordt een verraderlijke finale, maar ik heb er vertrouwen in. Momenteel heb ik geen zwakke punten."

It means something like
"It will be a treacherous finale, but I'm confident. At the moment I have no weakness."

Quite a confident lad, eh? :D
Though by now his confidence is warranted, methinks.

Even if he did feel weak, he probably wouldn't broadcast it for the whole world to know, now would he?

Küng on this kind of climb? Dude is +80 kgs, if he can beat 55 kg Brambilla on a 4 k 10% climb we have found the successor of Merkcx

Brambilla is looking tired these days. Moreno should be a lot closer than in stage 8. Yesterday Francesco Moser was visiting the race, maybe also today? :)

I guess as a fan of Wellens, you would expect (or hope) for more. As someone who is positively inclined to Wellens rather than a fan, I expected him to be a stage hunter who would be disappointed not to win a stage and I can't see objectively why one should expect more, since his wins always come in hilly rather than mountainous terrain (although obviously one can hope for more). I did not expect him to be regularly competitive in the high mountains (correctly), so for me his performance has been fine.

I was also expecting more of the usual suspects to be in this break (Ulissi, Wellens, Roche etc.), but since there is already a large break with a big gap, he could have been the best climber on such a stage, whose profile seems to be one of the most favourable to Tim.

Why are some people so sure the race won't go to the break? This stage could go to the GC guys, but I see it difficult to imaging Movistar or Astana working until the last 30km to make the race. By then, it may be too late. There is too much racing on Friday and Saturday.

But who knows? Cycling, eh?

I thought no teams would be bothered to control the break for the 180 flat kms, especially with what's coming in the next two days. However, it seems someone is driving the peloton, so the GC guys might actually have a chance for the win today.

To be fair to Modolo, he isn't lying. As sprinters go, he has been climbing well in this Giro. As witnessed by his placing on the MTT as just one example.
