Looks like Valverde wasn't lying about his problem being altitude.

We all knew that, once it's above 2000m, he's in serious trouble. Remember tour '08 for example?

HcT becomes extremely important at this altitude. It's quite possible that his is lower than the others. Everyone is different

Squalo taking over and Zaka dropping to the Bala group. If Nibs attacks the descent it's a straight up podium attack. Wonder if he's been sandbagging a bit.

Smart ride from Nibali today, knows he's not that good but just set a manageable tempo and was always able to make contact again after the accelerations while other riders tried to match them and then paid for it later
