The last time I remember something similar was the final mountain stage at the 2004 Giro when visitors blocked the col for riders behind the favorites group around Cunego and Honchar. Popovych was the most famous victim back then and if my memory is correct he ain't got any time benefits and lost his 4th place overall to Cioni!?

I couldn't tell for sure but a replay on French Eurosport I think showed Pinot puking on way up the Aspin. Either that or he has some serious post-nasal drip going on :sad:

Why? We still have Quintana, Froome, Aru, Bardet, Tejay, Porte, Purito and some others.

Only Pinot is gone. Contador is being saved another day. May recover fast enough.

There's "not great" and then there's "getting dropped by a 50 rider peloton that's going at Sunday ride pace". Presumably he has some kind of illness.

Posted earlier that A.Yates was chasing the white jersey ( at least for a day ) hence attacking on the top of the climb - Reckon he was at least 10 or 15 seconds clear of the peleton at that stage - He may still get the white jersey if times are neutralised from 3kms.

This year's Tour is neck and neck so far with 2012 in the most boring of recent times stakes.

Tomorrow four years ago was the first sighting at the Tour (after strangling one week races all season) of the by now infamous Sky train which shredded the field to pieces on the Planche des Belles Filles and gave Froome his first Tour stage win. Maybe Sky will commemorate the anniversary with some fireworks tomorrow.

I'm thinking back wistfully to last year's Vuelta, where the first week gave us GC action nearly every day and plenty of attacks.

Maybe this year will turn out like the 2011 Tour, where a tight and eventful second half made people forget how bad the first week was. We can but hope.
