Christophe Agnolutto in 2000 and - the most memorable of them all - Cédric Vasseur in 1997 won stages just like that. It's probably to early in the race this time, though.

(I remember that Vasseur stage quite well - and it's freaking me out that 19 years have passed since then. Gosh, I'm getting old...)

And Vasseur just took this photo in his current role as French TV pundit: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CmhSmgJWEAABonb.jpg

Were there any solo efforts since 2000 that stuck? Obviously Tony Martin came incredibly close in the 2013 Vuelta, leading for all 175km before being caught in sight of the line. Wiggins lead for 190 of 199km in the 2007 Tour.

At least the sedate pace is buying Sam Bennett more recovery time.
Does Rasmussen's 2005 stage win in the Vosges count for you!? Chicken instantly attacked on the first col of the day. Although Cioni joined him midway he literally was more of an anker that Rasmussen finally got rid of on the Bussang. After that he climbed Grand Ballon and the Ballon d' Alsace on his own as well as hammering down the descend and singly spinning into Mulhouse to finish first!

Even I could've rolled this out.

Not a single shot of Sky team. Are they riding this at all?

Zabriskie in the 2004 Vuelta. 162 km solo break.

Is it my imagination or is Sagan pulling a Cipo and controlling the peloton so Conti can catch his breath a recover a bit? Crap, I think even I could drink 2 Red Bulls and finish this stage with the bunch the way they are rolling so far.

Anyhow, the pace seems to benefit Conti...

I think they were referring to GTs.

Winning a mountain stage is also different to a flat stage where the peloton have a massive advantage by default, not that it wasn't very impressive.

Jesus Christ almost 2h:30m to go. Tinkoff is really really going slow, as they should. Why should they push? Why should anyone push? It's time for a few guys to attack, so Ettix have to work. The most patient sprinter will win. Cav Vs Sagz

Edit: Alberto looks like he is all *** up.

All this talk about solo rides when the real question should be why the breaks are less and less contested.
