I could see Nibali, Valverde and Aru attacking and winning the stage and taking yellow. Despite their DS's not wanting yellow so early.

Perfect situation for Sky would be for Valverde to win and take yellow, so Movistar have to control the early breaks over the next few stages. It would then isolate Quintana even more than usual, and let's be honest Valverde is going to try to win we know what he's like!

I don't really think this stage suits Froome to attack, he needs a real MTF. He might put a dig in at the end to try and stop anyone else going but otherwise I think Sky will be covering the likes of Movistar and Astana rather than trying to put the hurt into AC.

With that said I don't think they'll soft pedal, AC is still going to have to have recovered a fair bit and have decent form, but I think he probably won't have to cover any attacks.

Will be interesting to see what Martin, Alaphillipe, Barguil, Pinot, Bardet, Rolland etc. do. This could be a very difficult stage for one team to control and there are a lot of people with the chance to take yellow and hold it for a couple of days. Conversely, I'm not sure anyone with GC aspirations really wants to have to defend yellow on Aspin.

Froome is better than Quintana on this kind of terrain though, so he could try to attack.

But after all the **** Sky got on the French roads last year, they're clearly desperate to improve their PR, so I don't think they'll go back on their promise not to attack AC tomorrow.

I think if somebody else starts the action then Sky will take the advantage if it is possible. Promises like this most likely mean something like "we do not initiate".

I think Valverde is the main threat from Movistar. Even if he's not going for the GC, which isn't true, Sky will have to cover him. Allowing him to have a 30+ second lead when it hits the real mountains gives Movistar all sorts or options with Quintana there too.

More than the stage is the fact we are in the first flat week. This year the first week is short ad no so flat, we have just days, but 2 forst hard in the wind. quintanna looked great inn the second stage, but he shoudl pay this days more than Froome.

Payrol is a hard climb that suits Quintana, but the end of the sstage is better for other kinnd of riders, as Froome.

GVA only 18'' behind in GC.

Good break, if they get away, I think they'll take the stage.

edit: They have 3 minutes! Great.

VAN AVERMAET, Greg (BMC), PAUWELS, Serge (DDD), SICARD, Romain (DEN), GAUTIER, Cyril (ALM), GRIVKO, Andriy (AST), DUCHESNE, Antoine (DEN), HUZARSKI, Bartosz (BOA), VACHON, Florian (FVC), MAJKA, Rafal (TNK)

Breakaway: Grivko, Majka, Gautier, Van Avermaet, Pauwels, Huzarski, De Gendt, Sicard and Vachon.

Peloton: +2'10"

and yet today's stage is arguably an one in a lifetime opportunity to wear the yellow jersey for very many riders from van avermaet and bardet to matthews and kerdermann, so it's gonna be a carnage :)
