Lol, Swiss commentators about Viviani: his tears have dried since Gent-Wevelgem.
Edit: Viviani same time as Matthews after 2.5km.

We'll see what Roglic can do on longer climbs and proper mountain stages against some of the bes one week stage racers in the world, should be fun to watch.

Porte was 111th at the intermediate and 18th on the finish line. He's going to be unbeatable in the mountains this week
Look rather at the time gaps not at positions. He was strong but Dennis and Roglič were both still faster than him in the second part. Porte looks to be in pretty good form nonetheless. In my opinion he is the best MTT rider in the World so it will be interesting to see how he goes on stage 3.

Maybe in a sub 10min MTT, I'd pick a few guys to beat him in a hard, proper MTT.

Who? Quintana, Dumoulin?

Edit: Landa?

111th was only 17 seconds down though. He finished 14 seconds down, so was only three seconds faster than Matthews on the second part. (And slower than Roglic)

Peak shape Nibali, Quintana, Froome and Aru (the one thing where he's actually world class, almost beat Quintana on Monte Grappa and 3rd in the 2016 TdF uphill ITT when he was in bad shape, ahead of Porte, who was the 2nd best climber in that race, not to mention the fact that the whole TT with a few flat sections should suit a better TT rider like Porte much more than Aru.
No idea how strong Landa is in a MTT, we haven't seen him in a proper one.

I have a feeling Porte and Roglič will smash the MTT. Then stage 4 should be very interesting with Sky having a lot of weapons. Still think Roglič should win though. He has a better team here than in Pais Vasco and he is still in top form it seems.

Dumoulin would be close to, he was the only one close to Froome in '16 TDF MTT

Re: Re:

Yes, but I have a hard time calling that one a proper MTT, flat sections, the 2nd part mainly featured more shallow gradients and only a few steeper ramps an a downhill section at the end, it was clearly a MTT that suited the top TTers among th gc contenders more than the pue climbers. But Tom is probably one of the best in a MTT, his ability to pace himself his 2nd to none.

Plus, where was that mountain today?
Pretty absurd comment.

Thanks, I know that. And it's not really a surprise to see powerful riders like Dennis and Roglic beat him on a short power climb. Many guys, including Matthews, should be better than Porte in this sort of terrain.
