In other news. Valverde is not racing THE RONDE ... Which makes me happy because the last thing I want to see is Piti winning this race.

I guess the only question remaining is:

Will Sagan win solo or from a small group sprint? :D

If Quickstep riders play it right it's their race to lose, too many options and no chance other teams can control them all.
They'll attack on the Muur and then check who's left. It's gonna be hell for the others.

Christophe Laporte to take his first of 20 monuments .... should he run into a series of mechanicals or into Gianni Moscon I would expect

*** Greg Van Avermaet, Peter Sagan
** Arnaud Démare, Philippe Gilbert, Zdenek Stybar, Sep Vanmarcke
* Tiesj Benoot, Edvald Boasson Hagen, John Degenkolb, Alexander Kristoff, Michal Kwiatkowski, Yves Lampaert, Tony Martin, Oliver Naesen, Nicki Terpstra, Wout Van Aert

to watch: Vincenzo Nibali

The weather forecast is the same like every year: rain until Saturday; dry on Sunday. We won't live to see another wet Ronde.

QS has four potential winners. Gilbert is their leader, but Terpstra, Stybar and Lampaert might get away on a flat section between 40 and 20 km before the finish, when the other teams won't have many helpers left to organize a pursuit.

I would be delighted to see Vanmarcke win, but he will have a hard time pulling his attacks through to the finish.

*****Gilbert, Sagan
****Vanmarcke, Terpstra
***Van Avermaet, Kwiatkowski, Bennoot
**Stybar, Lampaert, Van Aert
*Kristoff, Martin, Nibali, Stuyven, Moscon

Re: 2018 Ronde van Vlaanderen

Can I take QuickStep over the field? They've been dominant this spring, and not just because they have a strong team, very tactically smart as well. Seeing someone like Gilbert domestique for his teammates, creating situations where Terpstra, Viviani have opportunities to win is very enjoyable. As I said in the DDV race thread, it is in my opinion worth almost as much as racking up wins for determining form. In E3 he was imperial in the chase group behind Terpstra, his work for Viviani in the finale of GW was impressive as well. Gilbert seems to be the safest pick, he is as strong or stronger than anyone else; and the most dangerous rider in the field. He is ferocious when he senses victory. If Gilbert does win though I don't think it will be like last year, more likely to arrive with a group than alone. However, he has already won de Ronde, and now is probably more focused on Roubaix then anything. So we may see him working for the team once again, so I choose Quickstep.

Re: 2018 Ronde van Vlaanderen

I am also looking forward to seeing if Roompot can continue their show from GW.

And of course it will be exciting to watch van Aert, his road campaign so far has been a great success.

It would almost be a surprise to me if Quickstep won't win this race. Terpstra is really strong, he was just chilling in DDV. Gilbert, Lampaert and Stybar are all among the ~8 strongest riders this spring, I ranked them in how likely they are to win imo. GvA looked good on Wednesday and he just gets stronger with longer races. Sagan didn't convince me so far, not the top favourite this year. Vanmarcke is not going to win, no matter what. Looking forward to seeing van Aert after a 260 km race, maybe he is still a bit underestimated?
However, one thing is for sure: never underestimate the shark...

***** Terpstra
**** Gilbert, van Avermaet
*** Sagan, Benoot, Lampaert
** Naesen, Vanmarcke, Stybar, van Aert
* Nibali, Kristoff, Démare, Martin, Stuyven

Yeah... even when the race blow up they will still probably have 4 riders there.

We just gonna have to hope someone or a couple of riders are stronger than all of them on Sunday.

Yeah, I echo the sentiments of QS - they are the huge favourites and without bad luck, I don't see how they can throw this race away. All of their 3 mains cards look super strong and then you have Lampaert as well, its pretty scary. Couple that with Sagan's super shady shape and QS are winning this race, my personal favourite is Gilbert.

I'd like to see GVA take it but QS' collective strength is going to be really hard to beat. I could see Terpstra or Stybar taking it. I think Sagan and GVA will mark Gilbert too heavily for him to win it and he's not going to take them in a sprint. Gilbert hasn't looked as strong to me this year anyway. That said, neither has GVA or Sagan.

Anyway, I think it'll be one of the following: GVA, Sagan, Benoot, Terpstra, or Stybar

This edition is hard to predict as none of the big classic guys is clearly way above the rest. In my opinion Vanmarcke has shown best performance on cobbled climbs so far this season but I doubt he will be able to drop everybody and hold his lead to the finish. I predict a sprint from a group of 5 or 6 riders. I don't think there will be more than 1 QS guy in the front group. In such scenario it should be between GVA and Sagan.
