Pau is receiving the Tour de France for the 71st time and their common history started in 1930. A basecamp before or after tackling the Pyrenees, Pau has been the start or finale of all types of stages, as the winners list confirms. Climbers like Rene Vietto or Fausto Coppi, attackers like Pierrick Fedrigo or sprinters like Sean Kelly, Erik Zabel or Robie McEwen all raised their arms in the capital of the French Pyrenees. Last year, France’s Arnaud Demare clinched his second Tour de France stage victory in town. With so many starts and finishes on Boulevard des Pyrenees, the Tour could not fail to create cycling vocations and many riders were born in or around Pau. It was the case for Victor Fontan, winner of two stages in 1928 and a yellow jersey holder in 1929, or 1956 team time-trial Olympic champion Arnaud Geyre and more recently Stéphane Augé, who rode the Tour eight times, Mathieu Ladagnous, with six participations, and Team Ineos DS Nicolas Portal, who lives in Pau and also rode six Tours.

Gelos

Set in the huge park of the château of Duplaa, the Gelos national stud farm is one of the most beautiful sites of its type in France. It houses 140 studs from 10 different breeds and 12 historical carts. All year round, animations are organised for the public. The stud farm was created in 1808 by Napoleon I. It was set in the former summer palace of the president of the financial court of the Parliament of Navarre. It is one of the very few 18th century buildings preserved in the region. Today, the stud farm is an active, lively structure, specialised in the reproduction of horses in a department which ranks at the top of the equestrian sector in France.

Born in Gelos in 1920 and deceased in 1989, Jean Matheu-Gelas captained France’s rugby union team in 1949 and has 24 caps.

Uzos

Uzos is home to one of the most famous jam manufactures and shops in France, created by Francis Miot, who died in 2015 after being crowned jam and marmalade world champion three times in his career. On the site was created the Feerie Gourmande museum, dedicated to the art of sweets. Francis Miot also created several sweets like the “coucougnettes”, voted the best sweets in France in 2000.

Bosdarros

A pioneer of French rugby, Helier Tilh, a six-times international in 1912 and 1913, was French champion five times with Stade Bordelais. He was born in Bosdarros in 1881.

Côte d’Esquillot
A classic of cycling races finishing in Pau, the Esquillot climb will play a leading role in the 2019 edition of La Course as riders will ride up it five times in their 135-km circuit.

Km 17.5
Gan

A “bastide” founded in 1335 by Gaston II of Bearn, it was named Gand (without a D) as a homage to the campaign of Flanders, in which his founder had taken part. The Prison Gate dates from the creation of this rural city, noted for the Famille Michaud Apiculteurs company, the world leaders for honey. Novelist Paule Constant, who won the Goncourt Prize in 1998, was born in Gan, as was rugby union player Jean-Roger Bourdeu, who played for France nine times.

Jurançon

Jurancon owes its worldwide reputation to its white wines (a dry one AOC since 1975 and a sweet one AOC since 1936). Jurancon wines were favourites of King Henry IV and of novelist Colette. Legend has it that Henry IV was baptised with jurançon and garlic. The leading grapes used in the making of jurancon are Small and Large Manseng.

Jurançon is the birthplace of alpine skier Annie Famose, who won two medals at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble and later founder the ski resort of Avoriaz in the Alps.

The only individual time-trial of the 2019 Tour will take place in Pau that has already welcomed two time-trials in the past: in 1939 (victory of Swiss Karl Litschi) and in 1981 (victory of Bernard Hinault). A powerful all-rounder, comfortable when the road rises could, like Hinault, seize the opportunity to capture the Yellow Jersey. A very special collector’s jersey that day marking the 100th anniversary of the Yellow Jersey.

Van Aert is the favorite, it's between him and Thomas for the stage win and between Thomas and Alaphilippe for the yellow.

Several other would-be contenders will either be given team orders to soft-pedal or will be too exhausted to give it their best.

Surprise winner (Haga?) definitely possible.

Well there are teams who still think they have GC contenders and who may have them. Then you have teams like AG2R that I'm not sure they have any riders who can do a good TT.

I think the gaps will be a little bigger.
I think Porte and Kruijswijk will beat Bernal, Also, A. Yates will lose time to Uran, Pinot and Fuglsang. Quintana to beat Landa. Landa, Bardet and Martin at more than 2 minutes.

I think Thomas is the favourite, van Aert looks like has lost a lot of weight and that could hamper him, but Alaphilippe should be able to retain the jersey, he'll go full gas and the jersey always gives some extra power. I expect a lot of TT specialists to take it easy because they have to save energies or have spent a lot of energies in the previous stages.

Alaphilippe didn't really seem to be in shape back then. I think he will perform much better today. The route also fits him better.

i wonder what Porte can do ? Maybe the course isn't ideal for him but if he has any form at all at this stage of the race he should be putting in a performance. Don't expect him to win it of course. Would have been a good one for the old version of Tony Martin and the ghost of Rohan Dennis. Thomas should go close along with Van Aert. Nice course for Kruijswijk as well. Bardet, Quintana, Martin and Pinot will at least be happy with the length of the TT as will Landa........

In the men's race, I think top 5 will have Van Aert, Thomas, Haga, another Jumbo and a Katusha rider. I'd expect Kruijswijk to solidify his position behind Ineos.

Thomas' last couple of ITTs (in the Tour de Suisse over 10 km and Romandie over 17 km) were pretty underwhelming considering he's usually been very good in short tests. He needs to improve a lot from that level to even be the first of the GC riders

Would be a very strange outcome of the TT... Known time trialists like Buchmann, Kruijswijk and Porte so far behind G AND behind the likes of Bernal, Mas and Alaphilippe? I don't think Kruijswijk and Buchmann would lose more than 10-15 seconds to Thomas..

Not on the level of her Flanders and previous La Course interviews, but every time she is interviewed, she manages to put a smile on mose people's faces.

And she also did that in her pre-race interview today.

This would be a great WC-route. Dno if its possible to cut out some of the flat, 27 km is a bit too long I guess? Would be a very open and agressive race i think.

Still think 27 km long ITT is too short in TdF, but in this instance, its probably for the better. Thomas would be in an even bigger pole position after today, especially after most of the big contender almost lost 2 minutes for free.
