What major contenders did the Spanish have that they could back? Italy perhaps, but it's hardly surprising that everybody looked at the Dutch.I blame the Italians and Spanish. There was a period where the main group split and the Dutch were all on the wrong side both had numbers yet they just looked around. Awful racing.

As individuals, not as team. I.e. Vos didn't show a second in the front and sprinting to fourth. What a failure...At least the Dutch actually tried something
