Does no team with a rider 15th-5th on GC have any ambition at all? Just make it a bit hard, keep the break in check and opportunities may present themselves to grab the stage or profit from GC riders cracking . Follow Ineos around placidly and you are getting nothing.

Teams have been doing this since 2012 - Ride hard on the flats and you'll get rid of 1 or 2 of the Ineos domestics before the mountain climbs.

there is no team with riders that can pace for the entire race except for ineos, the squads are just too weak.

Not only is Bernal the most dominant rider by far, Ineos is so much stronger than every other team that even if they would like, they really have no chance to create anything. Bag unless there is a crash.

Just heard that Masnada has tendon issues with his knee and had to abandon. Very sad.

That's obviously why he wasn't at his best this giro and so they had to put remco as leader instead. I guess a 8th overall is better than nothing.

Hope he recovers well and can show his true abilities in la vuelta with Cattaneo

Yes. Obviously otherwise Evenepoel and Almeida would have been working for him. I think the team is very sad to see their only shot at pink in Milan go home.

Yeah Bahrain could have probably pulled in a stage like today, but they lost their leader + 2 main helpers so no chance.

Same for perhaps Movistar.

Astana and EF both want the big stuff for their guys so are happy getting through. Could have seen some fun for Yates today if he was in better form but he doesn't quite seem there yet.

Trek should try something imo even if it's just seeing if they can threaten to put Nibali up the road to steal back some mins.

DQS could try have planned to try with Almeida too but that seems like a complete mess over there

The problem with riding hard is that usually you blow up more of your domestiques than Ineos' domestiques.

You pick a balanced team and avoid going like for like with Ineos - You only need two quality domestics and the rest can be rouleur type riders.

In the big mountains the only help Bernal will get is from Martinez if another team rides hard.

GC wise there will not happen a lot before the last climb unfortunately. The two upcoming climbs are not steep enough today.
For the next stages I am more optimistic. Also Ineos´s team for the high mountains is not that good here. You have Martinez and Bernal, but all the others are more allrounders. So if Bernal shows some weakness in the third week (perhaps because of back issues), his team isn´t untouchable.

Masnada abandoned. Good he'll be able to take a couple of weeks rest and head to TdF where he will be outright leader and #1 favourite.

There's no doubt DQS will grant him full team support and leave all ambitions besides (because what value bring Sam Bennett & Julian Alaphilippe when you have a guy with the abilities of Marco Pantani and Miguel Indurain on your team)

Curious to see how Tesfazion gets on in this break. He had at least one very good showing in Italian 1 day races earlier this season

EF have a strong enough team tbf. I'd also say Bora could as they've a pretty strong team. Likes of Sagan could do a lot if he was focused on dom duties like.

By Alaphilippe, you mean the French Voeckler?

EF are looking great, I just mean Carthy is at his best on the big stuff and in a great position anyway so they don't really have much incentive to do it on a middle mountain day

Passo della Calla's descent might be a key moment if the road is wet. A team pushing the pace would almost 100% cause splits in the peloton.
