Expect Bernal and Carthy to be active. Finally get to see if Yates has been hiding or waiting..................

Descent from Monte Rest, maybe somebody will have some creative ideas.

I see your point. Clearly, it's much shorter straight down the forest, then following all those hairpins.

Regarding weather, there should be no problem. Yes, it'll not be warm, but also still above 5 °C even on Zoncolan. Definitely no snow.

Looked up the weather for the Dolomiti stage and it'll be mostly above 0C with lots of rain. Conditions should be difficult but i guess he roads should be cleared off of snow.

Look up for the Monte Rest descent. It's very technical and crashes may occur. Visentini still has nightmares over it (and that stage in general).

I can see Puzzio leading first 5km, Castro the following 3 and then Tractor killing 99% of the remaining riders in the first km of the steep after which Bernal just leaving everyone in the mist. Ciccone might try once without significant impact. This is the kind of stage where I miss early attacks of in-shape Landa.

A friend of mine will try to get in so I'll be able to tell how strict the limitations are.

Re snow: the fact there is snow on top of Zoncolan at the moment doesn't mean it's going to snow today. Every forecast I've seen suggests is going to rain (and it's not 100% anyway). Snow level will be a full 400 Mt above the top of the climb.

I'm a bit more worried about Monday's stage. It's currently snowing on both Giau and Pordoi.
If anything about Monday is canceled I will make it my personal mission to accelerate global warming

Looks like the rain will accompany riders almost the whole day (maybe except first kms) and the closer to the Zoncolan the stronger it'll be.

The whole area between Sappada and Pontebba is one of the rainiest in all of northeastern Italy. They always seem to get the heaviest rain and snowfalls and the nastiest thunderstorms.

If the weather stays like this, I can see a lot of sprinters dropping out of the Giro soon.
And a lot of riders in general.

Heavy rain on the zoncolan sounds hellish, even snow would be preferable (imo) to rain at those temperatures. I don't think it's possible to keep warm when the water eventually seeps through everything, which i think is inevitable. And that's without considering the *** 20% slopes.

Which brings us to the fundamental question, what will Ramco do?
He will drop like stone... I don't believe he can climb with the best on the last ramp and, to be honest, he can lose 2-3 minutes easily there. I believe Bernal wants this one and he'll attack hard after Ganna, Moscon and Martinez will be setting a furious tempo until last 3 kms.

Assuming the GC guys fight for the stage it is difficult to look beyond Bernal. Carthy did well on the Angliru and Yates has shown previous ability to do well on stages like these, but his form does not seem there.

Smart (& obvious) choice is Bernal. He's strong, he doesn't mind bad weather & he has the team right there. He could build an unassailable lead & even win this Giro with a big margin. But (huge but) this is cycling & anything can happen, especially in these conditions on these sort of climbs.

I still expect something from Yates though because so far he's "the" vanishing act in this Giro. He's invisible.
