Yes if he let Ineos chase he would have lost more time to Yates but maybe could have put time into Bernal near the top.

Caruso is in the business of putting time into whoever is 4th in GC, not Bernal.

He wasn't looking good just before Yates attacked. Obviously Yates thought the same................strange because at that stage they were not making much inroads into Martin's lead so the pace by his team mates couldn't have been too bad.

Imo Caruso should try to put time into Bernal if he can because the podium seems pretty secure atm. And I kind of doubt Caruso is going to care much if he stands on the podium as 2nd or 3rd.
But then again it is very possible that Caruso couldn't have put much time into Bernal even if he went all-in for that goal. And if he deems 1st impossible then yeah 2nd is preferable.

Ya, I'd be the same. Even if Bernal is weak on stage 19 and 20, I can't see him losing over 3 minutes to Yates on those.

Yeah the final 2 stages simply aren't that hard. Alpe di Mera is a nice climb but it's just that. It's probably similar to Moncalvillo in the Vuelta. Not a climb where you drop minutes. And stage 20 just collapses as a stage because San Bernadino just is too frigging easy for what it should do

Agree. Think it makes it a bit more interesting, especially with Yates. Almeida is no danger, he is to far back. (whether that is 4minutes or 7).

That is unless Bernal is completely blocking, but I don't see a reason to believe that. Might as well be a bad day after a rest day.

He's the single ugliest thing to watch on 2 wheels but that was one hell of a ride from Dan Martin in the end.

Did not expect the Bernapocalypse, but then again he lost no time to Caruso and it's going to take him actually being injured and not just a bit drained for Yates to do 3:30+ and if he's injured it's kind of moot from a racing pov

Bit bummed for Bardet to slip back after so much good work.

As ever merely being able to do 3 weeks at a strong level is a big deal at the Giro.

On reflection, Bernal went boom after responding to Yates' attack, but was able to follow a slightly lower pace for the rest of the climb, which I guess would suggest a metabolic or fatigue related cause over a biomechanical one. But who knows, his pedaling seemed very square when he went boom.

Also catching a flu certainly not impossible given the weather. But his form seems to have gone down a notch or two.

Sure. Stupid that he bonked in the beginning. But maybe silver lining being that he might have a better 3rd week because his first week and a half were less stressful.
