How much do people reckon can Almeida gain here? There are still a few riders in front of him that he might be able to catch.

He can leapfrog Bardet, Martinez and Carthy (he gained respectively 35'', 19'' and 21'' on them on stage 1). As the above poster said Martinez will be most difficult given his form, 54'' gap and mediocre loss on stage 1.

How much do people reckon can Almeida gain here? There are still a few riders in front of him that he might be able to catch. That said, it's pretty insane how huge the gc gaps become behind him. Dan Martin is gonna finish in the top 10 likely more than 17 minutes behind the winner. That seems more than usual.
Bit more than usual, but not that unheard of. Quite a few 15/16 minute 10th places in the Giro. Nibali put 21 minutes into TGBM in the 2014 Tour. The 2019 Vuelta had both #9 and #10 over 20 minutes back. 2014 Vuelta had Froome at #4 over 10 minutes down.

Tomorrow is the day when RAI sends the helicopters between Caruso's back and Bernal's front
I was wondering where the caravan of motos sitting in front of him was today! I guess they didn’t get the memo that Caruso was going to attack. ;)

The forecast says mostly sunny weather and a light to gentle breeze blowing from the southeast, so Zülle's speed record might be safe.

Caruso should take the yellow bus route instead. I think he could gain more than two minutes that way.

Not likely. He lost 4:21 in Sestola. All the podium is within 4 mins of each other. So no podium for him even if no Evenepoel
Without the time lost dropping back for Remco in the sterrato stage and in the Zoncolan he maybe would have a shot with tomorrows itt to reach top 3.

It is not over yet, I am afraid. If Egan is fully recovered he should be OK. He has looked better and better after the Wednesday bonk. But you never know. I am interested to see how the Top 10 will finish tomorrow. Some good riders at the TT.

That assumes, all other things being equal, something we all know doesn't hold. You can't remove one variable -- stage to Sestola -- and then ignore others, like the gravel roads debacle.

It may pain you to admit it, but Almeida is fine cyclist and a genuine GT candidate for the future. Was he at or even near Remco's level at age 20? No, but that's frankly irrelevant. Take a look at Fortunato, who came good late in the Giro at the ripe old age of 25.

Hope the rain holds off. Ganna does his thing pretending to be a motorbike............Caruso spent some gas yesterday. Not sure I see much change to the top 3 on the overall time gaps. Yates is unpredictable and Caruso has been a model of consistency in this race. Bernal can just pretend his doms are towing him. Bernal was smart enough to make the most of early opportunities and take time when he could which is often the way with Ineos in grand tours, to make early gains and defend a lead. Yates must have given him some concern in the final week but lack of consistency put a stop to that and Yates time loss in the second week pretty much killed off his chances of at least winning the race.

In the opening time trial of 8.6 km he only gained 7 seconds on Bernal. He can take half a minute back or so, but never two minutes.

Its absolute rubbish to compare a very short opening time trial to a much longer time trial on the final day of a Grand Tour.

This is all about what is left in the legs. But still i expect no surprises here.

Don't think he means that Almeida isn't a fine cyclist. coming in 4th in a GT is still a great feat that many cyclists would sign up for, especially with his age. But people seems to think it is only due to Remco he lost time. and that isn't. Like you say you can't remove one variable. Removing the time loss he had from helping Remco also means you give him the same time as Bernal... Even if he could follow Bernal on those roads (no evidence of that) the additional fatigue he would have would need to be accounted for in the 3rd week.. So like you say its impossible to say, but a podium seems very unlikely due to the time he already lost.
He still looked good yesterday, so maybe he can do a top5 TT today.. Would be a great highlight for him to end the Giro on a high note as well.

If Caruso would have been 1<minute down like Roglic-Pogacar something could still happen today. But 2 minutes... seems a big stretch. Maybe 3rd place will be the most contested one.

Think Gana, who didn't seem to tire at all in the Giro seems to be hot favorite on this parcour for me.
