Ineos went all out after the first climb and the peloton broke in pieces. De Marchi was all the way in the back of the peloton at that point.

Partly down to bad positioning when Ineos slammed the pressure on while on the high plateau. High winds caused echelons

He was too far back and dropped on the descent

Ineos drilled the descent and caused gaps and then too far back as they started the climbs

I don't think you can say that yet. Sosa's terrain still has to come later in the Giro. With Sivakov out Ineos doesn't have too many mountain domestiques left.
