Splügenpass from that side is just stunning.

From the other side you could have Passo San Marco early on, but it would be fa away from the finish line.
The Swiss have been pretty easy with their Covid restrictions because of Tourism, so it could work out.
Otherwise you can always have a really big MTF in Montespluga.
San Bernadino is a badass climb, almost 1,900m of altitude gain.
Been there a few years ago. The hairpins on the swiss side are cool, but I acutally found the Italian side even more impressive. There are some extremely narrow hairpins through tunnels further down, which look pretty spectacular. But yeah, I'd love to see that climb in the giro regardless which side.

yes, minus the last section.

More news from today:
  • according to tuttobiciweb the Giro presentation will be on Feb. 4th
  • Zomegnan mentioned on Facebook the finish in Sestola as stage 4 and in Cattolica on stage 5
  • Ravenna - Verona seems confirmed from multiple sources. The only question is which day, either stage 12 or 13
  • No Tre Cime, the stage should be Selice - Cortina
  • If Cattolica is true (let's trust Zome), then it's clear they will descend the Adriatic, so the rumour of Montalcino as stage 10 gets again more credit. However the end of week 1 is still a mess. Some rumour has to be wrong.
New try:

1 Torino ITT
2 Torino - Novara
3 Biella - Alba
4 ??? - Sestola
5 Modena - Cattolica
6 Frasassi - Ascoli (Colle S.Marco)
7 ??? - somewhere towards Foggia
8 Foggia - ???
9 Castel di Sangro - Campo Felice
REST
10 ??? - Montalcino (the source of the Montalcino rumour says from Perugia, in Abruzzo they are sure the stage will start from L'Aquila, but that would be really long...)
11 Foligno - Perugia ITT (OR Siena - Ravenna)
12 ??? - Ravenna (OR Ravenna - Verona)
13 Ravenna - Verona (OR ITT in Veneto)
14 Cittadella - Zoncolan
15 Grado - Gorizia
16 Selice - Cortina
REST
17 ??? - ???
18 ??? - ???
19 ??? - Alpe di Mera
20 Verbania - Madesimo
21 Milano ITT

If only all of stages 1, 11, 13 and 21 were ITT's, tempting Rohan Dennis to ride for GC.

More news from today. A series of articles from central Italy have given a general consensus for the first 7 stages:
3 in Piedmont
1 in Lombardy
Piacenza - Sestola
Modena - Riccione or Cattolica
Frasassi - Ascoli (Colle San Marco)

the weekend stages are not mentioned, but we know that Campo Felice is one of them, and L'Aquila and Foggia should be involved, something that is hard to piece together.

The same sources give the Foligno - Perugia ITT as sure, but they do not mention any finish in Tuscany but only a start in Siena, for stage 12, that will finish in Bagno di Romagna. After that, Ravenna - Verona as we already knew. In the whole second week there is only the question mark of the Tuscan stage left, and whether the ITT is on stage 10 or 11.
For the record, these sources cite the Fauniera in the last two stages (the only thing from the third week that they cite), so I suspect their info is a bit outdated, at least outside of their region.

1 Torino ITT
2 Torino - Novara
3 Biella - Alba
4 ??? - ??? (Lombardy)
5 Piacenza - Sestola
6 Modena - Riccione or Cattolica

10 Foligno - Perugia ITT (either here or stage 11)
11 Perugia - Montalcino (only stage in question, could also be stage 10 and go somewhere else)

13 Ravenna - Verona
14 Cittadella - Zoncolan

16 Selice - Cortina
REST

19 ??? - Alpe di Mera
20 Verbania - Madesimo
21 Milano ITT

Now the newspapers I was mentioning yesterday do include Montalcino as stage 11. Maybe they read us ^^
Stage 4 could be the Mantova stage that was rumoured since the beginning.
Stage 6 confirmed to Cattolica.
Local article today says Fedaia - Pordoi - Giau before Cortina.

FEDAIAAAA!!!!

Perennial TT discussion...
Why wouldn't they all enter a GT with their hour record, and adjust results at the end of the race with average race speed?

I mean, the way it is, there are (obviously) too many variables to factor in making a valid test... For example, what should be the total amount of kilometers against the clock? In how many pieces should the amount be split... at the expense of one or two road stages? What the profile and route of the trials should be?
Or the basis of all calculations should be the estimated stage(s) time (since we're talking about the time trials)?

It would put a perspective on the hour record competition, too.

Beppe Conti tonight gave his whole route. It is basically what we already knew with the following exceptions:

stage 2 would be Torino - Torino, with Torino - "Coppi area" as stage 3
stage 4 directly to Sestola
stage 6 finish in S. Giacomo, just a bit higher than s.Marco
stage 7 Vasto - Foggia
stage 9 Foligno - Perugia ITT, from here same route as mine but with one stage advantage, all the way to Cortina stage 15
stage 16 "Alto Adige" (Südtyrol)
stage 17 finish in Sega di Ala!
stage 18 Desenzano - Bergamo
stage 19 starts in Busto Arsizio

Complete picture:

1 Torino ITT
2 Torino - Torino
3 Torino - Coppi places
4 Piacenza - Sestola
5 Modena - Cattolica
6 Frasassi - Ascoli (Colle S.Giacomo)
7 Vasto - Foggia
8 Castel di Sangro - Campo Felice
9 Foligno - Perugia ITT
REST
10 Perugia - Montalcino
11 Siena - Bagno di Romagna
12 Ravenna - Verona
13 Cittadella - Zoncolan
14 Grado - Gorizia
15 Selice - Cortina
REST
16 somewhere in Südtyrol
17 Val di Fassa - Sega di Ala
18 Desenzano - Bergamo
19 Busto Arsizio - Alpe di Mera
20 Verbania - Madesimo
21 Milano ITT

Where's the sense for the dark humor in this route?
Maybe on stage 16...
tbh I doubt stage 16 is gonna be like that. It's the most vague stage he said and doesn't fit with the dates we were given. Imho is likely that there is a stage 4 to be identified and then everything shifts to Cortina on stage 16. Then Sega di Ala as stage 17 and so on

I would say

1 Torino ITT
2 Torino - Torino
3 Torino - Alba?
4 Asti? - Mantova?
5 Piacenza - Sestola
6 Modena - Cattolica
7 Frasassi - Ascoli (Colle S.Giacomo)
8 Vasto - Foggia
9 Castel di Sangro - Campo Felice
REST
10 Foligno - Perugia ITT
11 Perugia - Montalcino
12 Siena - Bagno di Romagna
13 Ravenna - Verona
14 Cittadella - Zoncolan
15 Grado - Gorizia
16 Selice - Cortina
REST
17 Val di Fassa - Sega di Ala
18 Desenzano - Bergamo
19 Busto Arsizio - Alpe di Mera
20 Verbania - Madesimo
21 Milano ITT
