2021 Spring Classics CQ Game

With all available body parts crossed that they actually happen, I hereby launch the Spring Classics game.

Your team is to be made up of 12 riders, with a maximum total cost of 3000 CQ points during 2020 (you could use this page, setting the year to 2020, or download the 20201231.zip file from here) or use my selection spreadsheet tool here.

The races that will give points are the one day races in Europe from the Omloop to the Radklassiker, ie:

Send your team to me by PM on Cycling News or Velorooms by the flag dropping in the Omloop (its website still doesn't have a timetable, assume about 11am West Europe time) on Saturday 27th Feb. As ever, please try to send the CQ version of riders' names, and do not put anything else on the same line. I have sent my team to Comodoro, who was the first manager to send in a team.

Note the optimism in the thread title: I'm hanging on to the hope of Classics in the Spring. If fewer than 15 of these actually take place, I will aim to do something similar to last year and have a "Classics at some point in the year" redux version.

Any questions? Just ask.

I thought I had posted this here last night at the same time as I put it on VR, but evidently not:

I hope teams will come in a rush in the last 2 1/2 days (only 2 now!): please remember that this game starts on a Saturday, not a Sunday.

Of the eight teams in so far, all have at least 2 unique picks, and 55 riders have been chosen. Two of them are on 6 teams, and 2 on 4.

It occurred to me that I have never established a rule in this game for what happens if a team is over budget and not changed before the deadline. I shall remove the cheapest riders that solve the problem, and make up the team with whoever is picked (on at least one other team in the race) that is allowable.

So if a team has a total of 3050, and the cheapest rider costs 55 points, I will remove him, and replace him with the highest priced rider who cost 5 points or less (and if there are 2 at the same price, the first of them alphabetically).

If the team total is 3080, and the cheapest two cost 30 and 55 points, I will remove and replace them with a 5 point cost rider and a zero, or a 4 and a one if there is no 5, etc.

If the team cost is 3080, and the cheapest 2 cost 30 and 85, I will leave the 30 point rider in, and replace the 85 with a 5 point man (subject to the above).

But it is very rare that this happens, and I am usually able to alert managers in time if there is a problem. And if you use the selection tool download that I have now added to the OP, it shouldn't happen at all.

Cant seem to access spreadshheet
Del seemed to get around the problem, and submitted a team not too long after his message, but I have removed the file from Google Drive and moved it back, which hopefully fixes it. The location may have changed: now here.

I haven't got time to look up the exact start time of the Omloop tomorrow, so let's call it 12 noon UK (also 1200 GMT/UTC) as a deadline.

So if you are in Europe and you are planning a lie in or a morning ride for your Saturday, better get your team in tonight.

So here we go: a slightly disappointing 22 teams, but with lots of bargains we could be in for some big scores this year, so long as the races take place.

Josedin didn't actually pick half of that team, but was well over budget. So much so that even I as the legislator was unsure how the rules I set out above applied. But on taking out the six cheapest riders brought the team cost down to 2997, and although there were no 1, 2 or 3 pointers chosen, there were 6 freebies, so I put those in: I think that is the implication of what I described. The alternative would have been to remove the cheapest rider who cost more than the excess spend, and substitute in the most expensive selected rider with the remaining budget. I offered Josedin the choice, but haven't heard back yet. The alternative is in the spreadsheet as JosedinB.

Some difficult choises this year. It was very tempting to pick Van Der Poel with the option of many good cheap riders, but with many very good middlepriced riders it was a tough choise.

In the end I had to choose between GVA, Stuyven and Ballerini or MVDP, Pidcock and Jansen. And felt option one was the safest, and also really wanted to have Ballerini.

A bit worrying though that Pidcock and also Moscon (that I could not fit in either despite being a obvious pick) were so good today, but a good start with Ballerini that I can see is a surprisingly rare pick

Sorted by number of teams
18: POLITT Nils, VANMARCKE Sep
13: VAN AVERMAET Greg
12: NAESEN Oliver
8: LAPORTE Christophe
7: GILBERT Philippe, JUNGELS Bob, PIDCOCK Thomas, STYBAR Zdenek
6: JANSEN Amund Grøndahl, MOSCON Gianni, TERPSTRA Niki, THEUNS Edward, VAN DER POEL Mathieu, VANSEVENANT Mauri, WELLENS Tim

The collective team will consist of the nine riders on at least 7 teams, plus 3/7 of the total of the seven riders on 6 teams. That comes in quite a bit below 3000 points, but any combination of the 6 without MvdP was much lower, and any with him was over.

5: TRENTIN Matteo
4: ALAPHILIPPE Julian, GARCIA CORTINA Ivan, JORGENSON Matteo, PEDERSEN Mads, SAGAN Peter, TURGIS Anthony
3: DEKKER David, HERMANS Quinten, REYNDERS Jens, STUYVEN Jasper, WOODS Michael
2: BALLERINI Davide, BETTIOL Alberto, BRENNER Marco, DEGENKOLB John, DRUCKER Jempy, HAVIK Piotr, HOFSTETTER Hugo, LAWLESS Christopher, LIVYNS Arjen, LUTSENKO Alexey, NORSGAARD JØRGENSEN Mathias, OSS Daniel, PLANCKAERT Baptiste,
SARREAU Marc, SKJELMOSE JENSEN Mattias, TEUNS Dylan, VALGREN HUNDAHL (ANDERSEN) Michael

Josedin has asked to take option B, so he gets his cheap picks back and loses a unique pick in Kasper Asgreen and receives (not his choice) Bob Jungels.

His team is now:
PEDERSEN Mads
SENECHAL Florian *
JUNGELS Bob
BALLERINI Davide
DEVENYNS Dries *
TURGIS Anthony
LIVYNS Arjen
POLITT Nils
DEKKER David
VANMARCKE Sep
PIDCOCK Thomas
VANSEVENANT Mauri

That means that BRENNER Marco, HAVIK Piotr, NORSGAARD JØRGENSEN Mathias, SKJELMOSE JENSEN Mattias become unique picks for Bminchow, Comodoro, ChrisDK and DJSprtsch respectively. It also means that Vansevanant moves into the Collective Wisdom team in his own right, and the remainder of the score is 1/3 of the total of the remaining six men on six teams.

There is a tab for the similarity of teams (hence the final column above. Armchair and Amis Velo share 8 riders, and the following combinations share 7:
Amis Velo and Kazistuta
Armchair and Madrazo
Armchair and Otoxiep
Armchair and Search
Madrazo and Search
Rote Laterne and SemirS

while there are no less than 11 teams with which ChrisDK's selection has nothing in common: any pair of teams that does not include ChrisDK has at least one overlap.

When the spreadsheet is put up, you will see that there are columns and placeholders for a "So Last Year" team, and scores of riders in this set of races last year. I thought I had calculated these, but mistakes came to light, so I am ignoring that for this year, but keeping the facility in the spreadsheet, because I will reuse the formatting next year.
And when you see the spreadsheet (I will put up the link after I have processed today's races, but that will have to wait for tomorrow), you will notice several columns consisting purely of commas: that is so that I can produce tables on Velorooms.

Major Purchases

Even in the year following 2020, while so many riders are available at ridiculously low prices, the riders who we spend most on are a major part of what makes for success or failiure in the game. So the picks of more than 500 points that we have are:

Van der Poel with Kragh: Ray10
with GvA: Amis Velo, JSG, Rote Laterne
with Stuyven: Blues in the Bottle
only: Mellow Velo

Alaphilippe with Woods: Googolplex
with Matthews and GvA: Leadbelly
with Benoot: Otoxiep87
with GvA: Armchair

Sagan with GvA: Bminchow, Scrooll, Del
only: Kazistuta

Pedersen with Senechal: Josedin
with Woods and GvA: Comodoro
with GvA: DJSprtsch
only: Triley36

Woods with GvA: Search

Lampaert with Stuyven: ChrisDK

GvA with Stuyven: Madrazo
only: SemirS

And for the same reason that rare picks are noteworthy, rare misses might be too: JSG didn't select Vanmarcke, Scrooll overlooked Politt, and both Del and ChrisDK decided against both of those very popular picks.

So finally we actually get to the races. I'll start with the simpler of yesterday's events:

Race 1; Ardeche Classic

Jonathan Hivert came 9th, scoring 28 CQ points for the only manager who picked him, Ray 10.
He was the only rider in the first 30, the point scorers, selected for the game.

errrm, standings
Ray10 28
Everyone else 0

In the Green Jersey competition, there are just as many points available in a 1.Pro race like this as there are in the monuments. Points are distributed as CQ points are for a stage in the Tour de France: 80 for the winner, then 50, 35, 25, 15 down to 1 for 10th: points for a shared position are shared. A manager's position in each race is the total of all his scorers.

So here Ray would get 80 points for winning, and everyone else would get 6.95 ( a 1/21 share of the total points 2nd to 10th). To keep the numbers a bit neater, I will take 6.95 off everybody, including Ray, who thereby has a 73.05 to 0 lead over the field.

You don't really need to see that on a table do you?

In overall standings, Ray10 is 4th with 268, and everyone else is as they appear here (but one place lower for those 4th to 7th in this list)

And similarly, on Green points, Ray is second with 77.05, and everyone else's total is as here.

Race 3: Drome Classic

He's only gone and done it again: another UP for Ray 10 is the only scorer.
Odd Christian Eiking gets 5 points for 21st place, and Ray gets those 5 main game points and 73.05 green points again.

I wish Le Samyn on Tuesday were a 1.Pro race so that I could include it here, but instead the next instalment will be Laigueglia on Wednesday. That usually happens outside the timeframe of this game, so it is unusual to be including it. Ray 10 will probably have a unique pick in the startlist somewhere.

And after 4 events, the state of the battle of the forums is

CN Forumites (Blues in the Bottle, Bminchow, Comodoro, Del1962, DJSprtsch, Googolplex, Kazistuta, Madrazo, Ray10, Scrooll07, SemirS, Triley36) 374
Team Velorooms (AmisVelo, ChrisDK, Josedin, JustSomeGuy, Leadbelly, MellowVelo, Otoxiep87, RoteLaterne, Search) 350

And the spreadsheet is to be found, hopefully, here.

Race 5 Trofeo Laigueglia

One of the keys to this game is the balance between cobbled specialists and those for the hilly races. If many people had been aiming for big scorers in the Ardennes, we might have seen more points here today.

Those relevant to the game:

I'll take out the column for which riders yielded the points: it can easily be worked out. This time I did give the large number of low scorers some decimal shrapnel of remaining points.

Industry and Art tomorrow: I see Davide Rebellin is on the start list, but no-one has chosen him. I'm not expecting it to be a big scorer.
