2021 Vuelta CQ Game

Vamonos...

The final GT of the season starts on 14th August, and so does our final CQ game. As ever, scores and prices are based on CQRanking.com: to play the game choose 8 men riding in the Vuelta who have a total score for the year up to the race of 3500 points. Your points in the game will be those given by CQ for performance in the race.
There is no adjusting of the team once the race has started: this is a one-shot game, so if your star rider DNFs on stage one, you are in the same position of helpless resignation to fate as his team manager.

This spreadsheet shows the points riders can win (Summary: 500, 375, 315, 265, 240 for the first 5 on GC, down in steps to 135 for 10th, 66 for 20th, 44 for 30th and 15 for any finisher below 50th; 70, 40, 25 for the first 3 on a stage, down to 1 for tenth; the same scale of points for overall Pts and Climber jersey contests (nothing for white jersey), and 18 for leading GC at the end of a stage. Team TT points are different) but more importantly it has the prices for each rider that are applicable, which are the points a rider has earned in the 12 months to 8th August (minus some races held late in 2020 for which the 2021 edition has already happened). If you don't use that spreadsheet and prefer to look at CQ directly, then please be careful that you are using Sunday's prices and the 12 month points, not just the 2021 score .

Send me your teams by the time the first riders roll down the ramp for stage one on 14th August; use the PM facility on either VeloRooms or Cycling News forum to reach me. It helps me if you give only the names of the riders (no teams or prices) and in the same format as CQ uses: they are also on the spreadsheet I mention above.

I appreciate that while this is familiar to those who have played these games before, I have probably not been as clear as I should be because I am hurrying somewhat this evening. If you haven't played before but are interested, put a query in this thread or drop me a note.

I did finish dead last, with quite possibly the lowest score ever on a GT game. If Uran had had one more bad day, I might not have made treble figures. Apologies, I never did revisit the stats for that race to do an analysis of best value riders, best possible team etc. for the Tour Game.

CQ has done their download rather earlier than usual, and the selector spreadsheet has been duly updated, so the game is officially open for entries. However, the startlist is far from complete (and I am away from home and spending less time than usual in front of my computer), so don't be in too much of a hurry.

Thanks. Just an easier way to make sure I use the "correct CQ version" of the names. Say I ended up with Kron; I frankly wouldn't have known if I should write his name as "KRON Andreas Lorentz" - which turned out to be the case, "LORENTZ KRON Andreas", or just "KRON Andreas".
Whether that is the fault of CQ or of Danes for just being Danish is a discussion for another place

;)

Last reminder: 28 teams so far, and a little under 7 hours to go.

Those 28 teams have 68 different riders on them, 30 as unique picks, and three on more than half the teams.

Teams vary from >90% to <10% of the possible highest popularity score (Collective Wisdom team)

4 different riders costing over 1000 points have been selected; 22 that cost fewer than 100 points sit alongside them in our selections.

If you have sent me a team and I haven't replied, please drop me a reminder.

Right, no more entries in the last few hours, so there are 28 of us:

Team Similarity

We don't need any teams to select a tie-breaking ninth rider to distinguish between identical teams: the most similar line-ups are those of SafeBet and TRiley36 with 6 riders in common.
Five man overlaps can be found on several pairs of teams:
Amis Velo with Earns; Amis Velo with Northerner; Archie with Titan; Bicycle Boy with Rote Laterne; Bminchow with Del; Bonimenier with Leadbelly; Bonimenier with Safebet; Northerner with SafeBet; and Otoxiep with Yellow Knight.

Four Seasons Championship
We have 12 teams who have taken part in all 4 of my in-season games this year (Spring classics, Giro, Tour and Vuelta), so they fight out the Four Seasons Championship, but with Leadbelly having a huge lead after winning both the Spring and Tour games, and the only challenger within a country mile, Otoxiep, having a largely similar Vuelta selection, this seems something of a foregone conclusion.

But the standings so far:

Bicycle Boy has both Roglic and Cerny: the rest of who has whom should be obvious.

And the early lead goes to VeloRooms
CN 382
VR 419

The spreadsheet is here: it will be at the same place throughout, and I won't bother posting the link every day. It is a link to the updated file, so there is not an archive of the status after each stage, because I can't imagine anyone will ever feel the need for one.
But you will see a couple of teams entered into it that don't feature in the tables: two managers had alternative teams that they were thinking of using but rejected. It is no bother to have a tab for such teams if anyone else has a plan B that they wouldlike me to keep track of, or any late entrants to see how they would have done.

And the early lead goes to VeloRooms

Stage 2 Alpecin wins in stage 2 are this year's thing

Jakobsen is a very popular pick, other sprinters aren't, so the sprint stages in this game will very much revolve around where he may place.

Three of the Roglic teams also have Jakobsen: that might make for a group who will feature, at least in this classification.

Red Jersey
Sprint stages don't usually see many changes in GC, but quite a few riders who did OK in the ITT finished behind the peloton today, and whenever some riders lose position, others gain places, and projected points, even if they gained no time.

I will show some of those riders selected for the games each day, who gained or lost above some number that I choose on a whim. There might not usually be as many as I am showing today though.

And after that, our standings (although remember that as most of these points come from projected GC positions, remember that this is about as informative as to the final results as are the GC standings after a prologue and a sprint.)

I'm back where I finished the Tour de France game...

At least neither team has to bear the burden of my score on their average:
CN 463
VR 539

Tomorrow should also have big changes, and the beginnings of something that might resemble a realistic GC.

The presumably temporary high positions of Taaramae, Elissonde and Calmejane make this a less accurate projection of where we might be by the end than it would otherwise have been. But I wouldn't expect big changes for a few days.

There should be some time gaps and GC change for the right type of reason tomorrow.

Red points

Kenny wasn't king for long, and more of those who shouldn't really be in high positions have gone. But are those riders who belong in the high positions in the right order yet?

Standing
Who flinches first: TRiley or PRoglic? Because at the moment the most likely looking challenge to our leader is the accumulation of Red Jersey points by Roglic. But he might contrive to loan that out again today.

† The rarely used tie-breakers come into action: order determined by the score of the teams' second (then third, fourth etc) highest placed riders: Mellow Velo leads Search by virtue of Dainese outpointing Cepeda, and Bernal has more than Jakobsen, to Otoxiep's advantage.

Meanwhile, the inter-forum competition has seen a huge gap grow:

The spreadsheet, as ever, is here.
