Team Similarity

We don't have any identical selections this time around, so I haven't had to ask any teams to select a ninth man.

I have already mentioned the 7 man overlap between Slow Climber and the Collective Wisdom team, but there are a few teams that have 75% co-incidence with another:
Amis Velo & Leadbelly
Amis Velo & Rote Laterne
Comodoro and Manafana
Leadbelly & Rote Laterne
Northerner & Rote Laterne
Safe Bet & Slow Climber

Of course, whether the degree of similarity of teams is relevant depends on whether the riders who are distinctive to each team perform.

I was very surprised to see that no-one other than myself went for the Carapaz-Yates combination: I suspect that leaves me either the winner, or outside the top 20. A similar prediction might be made of Mellow Velo (only manager to choose Almeida) and Bicycle Boy (two of the three most expensive riders in the race). I suppose it is true of Redhead Dane too, but for rather different reasons.

Right, now I have some results to process (but not for a little while: other tasks await me...)

Stage 1
So far, it looks like Contador was on to something, while 19 teams with Ewan are wondering if their chances are already gone.

Purple points
The points for stage placings, and nothing else, make up the minor classification. But the points distribution is different from that in the race, so while riders at the top of maglia ciclamina ranking will probably do well here, the order will not be an exact replica.

Pink points

What we have here are the GC points as though the Giro were to finish with no further change in rankings, here and now, KoM and Points classification points on the same basis, stage points as above, and an 18 point bonus for anyone to wear the pink jersey the next day.

Girmay + Bilboa don't quite outscore Van der Poel +Carapaz, but by the time other riders are included, Titan takes the first leader's spot.

InterForum Challenge
Those who submit their entries via VeloRooms (AmisVelo, Archie Boy, Josedin, Leadbelly, Mellow Velo, Otoxiep87, Rote Laterne, Scrooll07 and Search) against the rest (apart from me) representing Cycling News Forum, by average scores. I won't report it every day, but I'll update from time to time.
I can't imagine there is anything causative about it, but neither MvdP nor Girmay were chosen by anybody at VeloRooms, so the averages after the first stage are anything but close:
CN 598.8
VR 357.2

All of the numbers are in the Spreadsheet on Google Docs. It will be available in the updated form (unless something goes wrong) at the same location throughout, so come back to this link on the days that I don't bother posting it.

Stage 2 Short Budapest Time Trial
One of the combinations of major picks that no-one went for is Van der Poel & Yates: that team would have had an excellent start.

But not at all bad for more than half the teams.

Pink points
Because these are projections, they can go down as well as up. For example, Girmay is no longer second on GC, so is no longer on schedule for 375 points for that. I'll show the main changes for riders relevant to the game, but what is deemed significant may vary day to day.

Standings
I suspect it will take until at least after Etna, possibly until after Blockhaus, before any conclusions can be drawn from the table. However, it will stabilise a bit tomorrow, because a sprint stage will generally have little effect other than the daily stage points.

Any points for the leaders jersey?
Yes, but not on the last day.

6 of the top 7 teams are those with Van der Poel. He is the source of 786 of those points. Those 786 are made up of:
Projected GC 1st: 500
Projected points competition 1st:70
Projected mountain competition 1st: 70
Stage points (a win and a second): 110
2 Pink jersey wearer bonuses: 36

If MvdP decides that he enjoyed racing through Szekesfehrvar the other day so much that he wants to do it again in the Tour de Hongarie and so withdraws today, he obviously will not win GC or the other classifications so his teams here will lose those 640 points (and whatever happens, they are very likely to lose most of them as the race progresses).
CQ will not remove the stage and pink jersey points, so in this game those 146 points are locked in: they are secure.

Leader's points (I tend to refer to them as Pink jersey points) are best understood as for the right to wear the jersey the next day: they are not given after the final stage. There are no points in the game (or on the CQ site) for leading the minor 'classements'.

Until a couple of years ago I included the pink jersey points in the purple sub-contest, but it shifted the balance too much so I only have stage points in that one now, but pink jersey wearer points are part of a rider's haul of points on the CQ website, so they are part of the Pink score here. And sometimes a very important part of it: they can add up to being worth multiple stage wins.

Sprinters

If we consider the headline sprinters in the Giro to be Cavendish, Nizzolo (both unpicked), Ewan (on 19 teams), Gaviria (5 teams), Bauhaus and Demare (unique picks for Redhead Dane and Josedin respectively), then Evans is the Best and Kazistuta (the only teams to double up on these sprinters, with Ewan and Gaviria) should be the teams to watch out for on the flat stages like today.

Pink points
Absolutely no change in the GC projected points (apart from the unfortunate, and unpicked, Tratnik losing his 15 finisher points) and some alteration in the points and mountains classifications (top climbers Zabel and Eenkhorn passing MvdP in the latter, so he ends up with a negative change today). So not much happening today:

Rufs gets an unchallenged day at the top tomorrow, and CN can take the day to wallow in their lead in the interforum challenge: 777 to 729

Stage 4 Etna
Purple points

It's fairly rare for all of the top ten to have been selected, so nine of them is pretty good, even if they were largely unique picks, apart from the popular winner.

Standings
TRiley is above Salvarani on the basis of my rule that the top scoring non-shared contributor to a team is disregarded (thus rewarding teams with a more even spread of scorers). The two teams in 5th cannot be thus split. (but the forum software aligns data typed in here differently from that imported from Excel)

Losses can be deceptive as well. Although Yates seems to have lost a lot more today than MA Lopez, he is still poised to get plenty of GC points (and quite possibly more as today's protagonists drop away), while obviously the day's less successful Lopez will now be a 500 point of their spend that will yield nothing for the more than half the field that has him.
Although for Van der Poel and Dumoulin, the drops probably give a truer indication of their GC expectation than their previous standings.

A fairly huge range of outcomes for the day:

Triley's position looks good for as long as Lopez stays in pink. And even after that, he will have several days worth of pink jersey bonuses and a team that would still be top even if all JPL's projected points were removed.

The interforum challenge is a lot closer than it was after stage 1: CN 816, VR 791

Much less change on a sprinters' stage, with changes in the maglia ciclamina and Almeida gaining a GC place on the grounds of intermediate sprint seconds being the main non-stage point issues.

I'm away for the weekend for a major family event, so I have no idea when I will have any time/sobriety/internet availability. I'll do what I can, but don't be surprised if there are no updates until Monday evening.

Stages 7, 8 and 9, and Rest day round up

Pink points

I am not going to try to break the rider score changes down day by day: nearly all of them were on Sunday, apart from JP Lopez taking 18 pink jersey points a day, Guillaume Martin rising to 4th, then down to 6th today, and Kamna losing the lead in the KoM classification, and some DNFs.

So the main rider score nett changes over the three days are:
HINDLEY Jai
229
7
BARDET Romain
222
5
ALMEIDA Joao Pedro Gonçalves
198
1
CARAPAZ MONTENEGRO Richard Antonio

The table takes on some semblance of what we might expect, but surely with a fair bit of change still to come. Teams with, Kamna, Vansevenant and Taaramae are now looking at something more akin to what they might have expected: teams with Yates are perhaps less likely to have anticipated finding themselves contemplating a lesser outcome.

Laarsland has 3 non-finishers, DJSprtsch and Otoxiep each have two.

And in the interforum challenge: VeloRooms 865; CN Forum 805 (or 830 if we were to exclude Redhead's randomeers)

Meanwhile, the spreadsheet resides here.

Tomorrow should similarly be all about the stage points, but a different group of riders should be expected to take most of the points.

Stage 11
The annual Po Valley bowling lane stage. All the expected names in the top ten, but not in the order that anyone might have predicted.
