If it stays like this it's actually perfect for Bora, two guys ahead and basically everyone isolated, Carapaz has only Sivakov left. Very disappointing if they don't try anything.
If Sivakov has to pull on the flat afterwards and Porte doesn't make it back (mainly because of Nibali's tempo on the descent) they are actually in a good position.

Bit of a shame, we could have seen some real damage on this descent if the circumstances had been a bit more favourable. Astana is just not strong enough to have good men to bridge to in the breakaway as well as someone who can shred the peloton up the Mortirolo climb.

Nibs probably thought he's getting up towards Valverdes age so isn't gonna take too much risk on the descent and thought about his future.

I think he'll take it easy now and wait for more domestiques to make it back

edit: there's Narvaez already

Just tuned in, judging by the page count some significant stuff must have happened already. Could anyone explain quickly maybe?

Bunch was getting shredded before the climbing even officially started.

Lots of good break action to start the day and high tempo to begin with.

Ineos eventually took control and quietened things down in the bunch.,

Attacks, counter attacks and separations in the break going onto and up Mortirolo

Astana pushed the pace in the bunch and drilled the top to set up a Nibali attack that did cause a split

Pozzo crash on the descent

Large regrouping at the bottom but not everyone is back. Break still up the road

It actually looks good for Valverde to win the stage today.

Certainly. Judging by his monument skills, he should benefit from it having been a longish day, too.

And the tough gradients on the final climb should be good for him.
