what one remembers of cycling history is the exploits, rarely when ten riders finished in the same minute.

Suspense and unpredictability are what make races worth watching. Predictability is the death of entertainment. Extremely dominant riders are the death of entertainment. I couldn’t give a dried dog poo about how great a champion is or how much he showed his dominance in “exploits”. It is just intensely boring to endlessly watch the obvious winner win as expected.

What makes a MVDP or a WVA entertaining is that they are fighting each other (and Alaphilippe and Pidcock). The rivalries create suspense and entertainment. Without the genuine rivals, the real competition, the titans of the sport are just a pestilence.
