2023-25 Emerging Riders CQ game

Page 6 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
A shame he couldn't be in my team (as I said, I should have risk a bit and pick him already in 2023 fresh from the amateur circuit) but it's nice to see him doing so great :D

Btw his older brother Jaime returned to racing at amateur level and was 3rd at the spanish elite championship, where the bros could race together for the first time ever in a competition. And now he's racing for a portuguese conti team.
He can join others in the Hall of Shame that were never chosen:
Vlasov
Zingle
Vauquelin
Cosnefroy
Campanaerts
Theuns
Benoot
Zana
Schmidt
Johannessen
Meurisse
Healy
Masnada
Vine
Lafay
etc etc

I had a good look at Castrillo as a 0-pointer for the main CQ game last year. As a Memorial Valenciaga winner and Spanish U23 ITT champion who looked like he also could climb a bit, I thought he could at least score some points. Was tempted to take him as a an almost guaranteed unique pick with some upside. And as a result of being in the mix for the main game, he also made my shortlist for this game (again without being selected).

Was happy to see him do well last year (and this!) despite not picking him, as his score wouldn't have been game-changing, and especially not for my hopeless 2023 main game team. But he sure would have been an upgrade on Matthew Walls or David Dekker.

I had a similar temptation to take Jaume Guardeño this year for both games, but again thought better of it. But it seems that Spanish conti neo-pros are becoming a bit more viable nowadays. Until recently, the young Spaniards used to be very not ready for the pro ranks when they stepped up from the amateur scene, and they often needed a few seasons to emerge.

I mean if you win Valenciaga, you absolutely can climb quite a bit hahaha
It's probably the hardest "classic" there is in the spanish amateur scene. Plus he also won the Subida a Gorla. And the u23 itt nats. The full GC-rider packet, although with his broader figure he struck to me more like a good allrounder in pros rather than a GT rider.

Guardeño looks more like a "pure" climber - although he also can defend decent the tt - and I agree he's been this year the best spanish neopro coming from the amateur scene. For sure he's on my short list for next year :)

This cohort had two stage wins at the Giro, and have followed it up with one win, and a serial stage challenger, in the Vuelta.

*This update was done after Segaert's win in the Euro ITT, but using data from before it. But it makes no difference, as CQ doesn't give points for continental U23 titles.

But Vuelta top ten finisher Lipowitz and folk-hero Pablo Castrillo were missed by all of us.

Popular picks have some of the big scores, so a fairly high scoring month. But more so for one team by a noteworthy amount.

Devil's Elbow won the monthly scores by more than 200 points, missing only the rarest picks among the riders who scored 100+. That's enough to put him back in the lead. Zipi enters the top ten.

I actually do have Lamperti in the edition prior to this one, so as insanely good as this update already is for me it could have been even crazier. Still, happy to be back on top, especially because it's combined with the first little bit of separation this edition has seen.

Assuming none of these are likely to place very highly in Lombardy, we are pretty much into the odds and ends of the season here.

Devil's Elbow was 100 points behind 8 weeks ago, so either he has broken clear, or he is demonstrating how quickly things can change. If the latter, then there are plenty of teams closely gathered behind him hoping for a Year 3 challenge.

The folk hero of the Vuelta, and Movistar's great new hope, is the ninth best scorer in the Collective Ignorance team, and while he wouldn't be part of a best possible team, we all have a number of riders in our selections who we would have been wise to omit in favour of him.

As to the bolded, if you had included Castrillo rather than your lowest scoring pick (Vandenabeele), you would be 2nd rather than 11th, so not a difference to be sniffed at.

The main dangers for me next year are Morgado and/or Christen going ballistic, if neither happens a 500-point buffer is likely to suffice.

Could be, but I see it more like an aggregate of your group of 6 riders against mine (or the differentials you may have with other competitors).
In our case, if Poole & Penhoet that I see as the best of your group have a season of bad luck, 500 poing may slip away very easily... It's difficult to predict, so in the end you have a good advantage but it is nowhere near done yet.
I paid a visit to your team. Between us, it falls to:

If a gap can open up in 2 months, it can surely be closed in a season. The intrigue is how if might be.
Well, as an optimistic I see infinite scenarios in which my group of 6 riders do 500 more points than his group of 6 riders. The good thing for both of us is that all those 12 riders are still doing fine going into the last year of the game and all of them will be at WT tems and will have opportunities to score big. So we'll see :)

When I checked my team I saw that my scores (11,524) don't match the official game scores (10,815). Is there a mistake in my notes?

I am sorry for not having communicated my doubts earlier. But until today I have not been able to send a single message all year.
As with the 2024-26 game, it's because you are looking at more recent data. I have updated the data (I waited for a while as there are often corrections and adjustments, although in fact the downloadable spreadsheet is still of 20th Oct) in the spreadsheet, and had hoped to post tables here yesterday, but things didn't work out. Hopefully I will get those probably-final-for-the-year numbers up today or tomorrow.
But rest assured, the new data has the same total as you have calculated.

I'm a bit concerned to hear that you haven't been able to post all year: forgotten password? Maybe contact community@futurenet.com if you think the site caused the issue.

During the season I tried to send messages repeatedly, but the website would not let me and the only explanation it gave me was that I was not authorized to send messages, without further explanation. Yesterday I was making changes in the email and password and -by the results- I managed to fix the problem.
Regarding the scores issue, I thought that the last table was the definitive one and that the issue was closed. I didn't realize that the last update was from October 9th.
I apologize for my distraction and thank you for the prompt clarifications to my doubts.

It's not something I always look for, but I suspect that virtual 40th is about as poorly as the Collective Ignorance team has ever done.

Standings which, for the purposes of bringing a task forward from New Year's Day, I will treat as end-of-year standings

I wish I hadn't done that: I'd forgotten how well I was doing in this version during year 1.

Spreadsheet

I didn’t realise I had the best season score for both seasons so far, that’s pretty wild.

Going through the rest of the top-10, odds are it’s me versus Cordi. The standings show that nobody beats me for the more settled-in picks, and basically all the riders I really need to worry about are covered by Cordi. I see plenty of combinations that could beat me, I see plenty that could beat Cordi, I struggle to see any that could do both.

But 800 points is a nice head start before the last year of the game
