Head (& fatalism) says Evenepoel, heart says Rogla... with a sprinkling of logic as well (real logic, not the Evenepoel fanboy variant).

Evenepoel makes sense when we consider his career trajectory, his form, his potential & his expected superiority in flat ITT's. It would be 'normal' for last year's Vuelta winner to continue his upwards trajectory & win the Giro this year.

Heart says Roglič though, i.e. because if there's one rider who can disrupt expected trends, it's Rog. He's an outlier, an 'ovni' in the pro peloton. His rider profile doesn't follow any logical pre-existing rules regarding age, form drop off or any areas which people could use to predict his doom in GT's now.

I mean what he did already this season is crazy considering his shoulder operation & last year's sketchy form. It's just a fact Roglič looks stronger this year than he did in 2022. So... we'll see.

I'd love for that final ITT to be decisive though, with a sort of quasi exorcism of La Planche with a reverse result.

for me its the other way around.
Heart says Remco, head says Roglic.
Simply because i believe Roglic will be very strong and isn't afraid to gamble. Remco will ride to win in all situations, while Roglic will ride for others to lose. e.g. remco will pull as a leader and when he is behind. Roglic will first look at the others and rather go down with Remco together then riding with Remco in his wheel. Because Remco will always ride if he can and Roglic will take his advantage out of it. (Its a bullet proof tactic when riding against Remco)

f (big if) Tao finds his 2020 Giro legs I can see him being up there with Roglic and Remco in the mountains. So far he has looked good this year.

Also, that Bahrain team looks stacked. Haig, Caruso, Mäder & Santi Buitrago.
Bahrain has a nice depth, but could anyone of these be up there with Remco and Roglic? Can't really see that. Then I consider it more likely that this could be Tao, Thomas, Vine or perhaps even Almeida. Carthy also seems more likely than Haig and Mäder.

When looking at the profiles, I expect it to be quite close for Roglic and Remco for the first 2 weeks. There will be some difference due to TT and some bonus seconds, but it won't be more than 1-2m.

Then from stage 16 we'll see if one of them is losing his form, and eventually during stage 18-20 one of them will be destroyed. I don't expect it to stay so close until they finish in Rome.

I want Rogla to win, but voted Remco mainly cause Giro was made specifically for him to win it. This is the best possible route for Remco and if he doesn't win it against this competition then why bother doing GC in TDF at all...

That's why a balanced cycling fan in general should stand up against GT routes designed for the (outstanding) features of one single rider. Roglic or other rider winning would do cycling in general and Remco a favor (and also to his fans).

I don't get how this route is designed for Remco to win, thats all in some people head..
If Remco didn't participate, the parcour would be designed for Roglic to win.
If Roglic also didn't participate it was designed for Almeida to win.
Its a tiny 70km TT split in 3 small ones where one is climbing. This is actually the TT numbers of the 20xx years but specially tailored towards climbers (.E.g not remco).
2002: 3TT (6km, 30km, 43km)
2003: 2 TT (42km & 33km)

2023: 19, 35, 18 (climbing). People: this giro is exceptionally made for Remco the TT specialist.
Besides being able to say there are 3ITT, the ITT distances themselves are worth nothing. (last one being uphill favoring climbers ..)
(fyi: 2019: 3 ITT, so it tailored for Roglic?)

A GT oriented around TT would at least have 100+km with 2 TT of 50km (for Giro, for Tour that would be 150km).

How blind can Remco groupies be?

From none other than Cycling News:

When the Giro d'Italia route was unveiled in Milan in October, the map showed some 70km of time trialling, including two flat tests in the opening week. In other words, it was a route that seemed to double as a come-and-get-me plea to the newly minted world champion Evenepoel.

The Belgian didn’t take long to heed the call, formally confirming the open secret of his Giro participation in November, by which point he was already busily reconnoitering parts of the route. Evenepoel, those close to him say, relishes the methodical steps of a long-term project, and this, his second tilt at the Giro, has been planned along strikingly similar lines to his successful Vuelta a España build-of up last year.

Glad to see you already found your excuse for post Giro.

Does anyone have an idea how route preparations for GTs are done by teams? I know how Pogačars UAE does things. They check all important (and even not so important) routes first hand by visiting them, recording them, bringing riders with them. I know how Jumbo does things. They don't do any of that, they take what they get by organizers and that's it. I find this crazy but Roglič confirmed, Jumbo didn't visit any Giro routes this year, Roglič wasn't anywhere close to those routes eather. It was basically the same on Tour and Vuelta. UAE would never allow that to happen.

How do other teams do this?

Great to read you guys but where is @Eshnar 's preview?

I'm also very much looking forward to this preview!

Heart says Remco (so I voted Remco).
Head can't decide though.

Before the season I was actually more confident to vote Remco but Roglic has impressed me the past few months with his high level after coming back from injury. It's scary to think how much he could possibly still improve (after Catalunya) considering his hampered preparation. But I keep the faith in Remco!

I just hope it's not a crash/mechanical/illness that ultimately decides the race.

I don't really expect anybody else to be close to them if they can keep out of trouble.
