Vuelta a España 2023 Vuelta a España route rumours

Page 6 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
First two stages have been officially presented today. They're kinda meh

By the looks of the fake 3D profile, stage two will include a climb to Montjuich, a descent and an uphill finish at the Olympic Stadium. They'll get to Barcelona riding down the Llobregat valley skipping all other climbs surounding the city. I'm not sure Purito likes this.

Is that similar to the 2012 stage?

ITT in Valladolid confirmed. Distance is still to be confirmed and the date will be on a Tuesday in September after a rest day, which could be either on the second or the third week.

Unipublic is on the way to present a Vuelta route on the 40th anniversary of the great '83 edition (first with live TV and possibly the best edition since then) with the only revisit of the ITT in Valladolid.

Asturian TV has announced the following rumours:
Ribadesella-Angliru
Pola de Allande - Cruz de Linares

Fans have been asking for years the inclusion of Cruz de Linares as a pass and someone has decided to troll them hosting a MTF. Either side is equally good, but this is turning things upside-down to become a big WTF

FYI, North side

and South Side

To be fair, of all passes Unipublic are yet to discover, Cruz de Linares is about the best one to use as an MTF because both sides have all the steep stuff in the first, say, three-fifths. South side would be the better option as it links up better with the other bigger climbs in the area. Also nice that they appear to put Angliru the day before it, stage order seems very good based on the rumours so far.

That's as may be, but you did still point out the big problem: of all PASSES Unipublic are yet to discover. I'm expecting since it's the day after Angliru, they will probably loop around to the west and arrive there from San Lorenzo west, but Marabio north, San Lorenzo east, La Colledoria west, Marabio north and then the MTF at Linares would probably be a best case scenario given what we've been told.

I don't expect any of those loops if they come from Pola de Allande. That's another nice trolling from Unipublic with a stage departure next to La Marta.

Stage 20 will finish at Guadarrama. That means Asturian stages won't be on a weekend.
My guess is that they'd need a transition stage between Asturias and Guadarrama, so Angliru and Cruz de Linares would be on Wednesday and Thursday respectively and the ITT at Valladolid would be on Tuesday in the second week.

Stage 1: Barcelona TTT
Stage 2: Mataró - Barcelona
Stage 3: ??? - Andorra
Stage 4: Andorra - Tarragona
Stage 5: ??? - Burriana
Stage 6: ???
Stage 7: Utiel - Oliva
Stage 8: ??? - Miserat?
Stage 9: Murcia???
Rest day
Stage 10: Valladolid ITT?
Stage 11: ???- Laguna Negra
Stage 12: transition stage in Aragón
Stage 13: Biescas - Tourmalet
Stage 14: Belagua (Hourcere+Larrau)
Stage 15: Lekunberri (S.Miguel de Aralar)
Rest day
Stage 16: Cantabria???
Stage 17: Ribadesella - Angliru
Stage 18: Pola de Allande - Cruz de Linares
Stage 19: transition stage in Leon-Zamora
Stage 20: ??? - Guadarrama
Stage 21: Madrid

Either that, or the same route as 2015/2018. Unless they pull a surprise and come from Puerto de León, finish atop it, or come from El Escorial, but that doesn't fit if it is indeed a homage to the Clásica a los Puertos.

They could repave the alto de Abontos and the connection to the Puerto de León. I think they did that route once in the 80's, but for a few kilometers it's unpaved. So, that's not a very likely option neither. From all the finish locations possible in that area, Guadarrama seems not the best located

so, same stage like this year, but than not with the finish on Cotos, but after >25km downhill?
The Guadarrama stage is not really a homage to the Clasica de los Puertos but to the cycling club who organised it. And that's a stretch from the local official who reported on it.
Guillén himself has talked about a hilly stage like stage 20 of the 2021 Vuelta. They could do something around the hills South-West of El Escorial including a final climb on the streets of that town before heading North-East to Guadarrama. That would have 8 km after the end of the final descent.
Abantos is not happening anytime soon, and it has to do with the road crossing regional borders and not providing essential connections.

A local official from the city of Guadalajara has been caught in an interview saying that stage 12 will go from Guadalajara to Consuegra.
According to him the news has shown up in some specialised cycling media but the local council has not been officialy informed yet.
The folks at the APM forum are going nuts trying to figure out how to fit this in the route.
A quick Google search shows that the only references to that stage found in the internet are the video with the interview and a blog with a Vuelta route result of an exercise of mental onanism by a fan. Note that this is not a random fan but the dude who proposed Cuitu Negru.
Someone is playing Dia de los Inocentes (Fool's Day in Spain) two days in advance.

The rumoured stage in Cantabria will be Liencres - Bejes

The bulk of the text in the link below is behind a paywall. I can only see it will be a short stage with a route to be confirmed, There's barely 100m between the end of the descent of Collado de la Hoz and the start of the climb to Bejes, but this is Unipublic so get your complains ready.

The stage to Laguna Negra might enter La Rioja, which opens the options to include some climbing close to the finish. Not bad if that means they do Piqueras and Santa Inés even if these are mostly 5%-6% climbs.

Stage 8, which was rumoured to include Alto del Miserat as the last climb, seems to be now a finish at Xorret de Catí.

the stage to Laguna Negra would be quite reasonable this way. Would be a very decent design. At least not the typical unipuerto stage. But considering the low percentages and the more important pyrenees stages the next days is it unlikely that we will see long range attacks.

The news that Xorret de Catí will be stage finish (semi-mountain finish) is less great. It links really badly to the other climbs in the area. So that will most likely be a medium mountain stage with some 3rd and 2nd category climbs mid way the stage, but to far from Xorret de Catí .
