Bronze with broken rib: Uno-X rider defied the pain
Solbjørk Minke Anderson raced to a bronze medal at the Danish Championships, even though she crashed after only 250 meters and bruised her ribs.
Uno-X had a good day when the women competed in the Danish championships in road racing in and around Aalborg on Sunday.
19-year-old Alberte Greve impressed when she secured the Dannebrog jersey for the coming year.
Her one-year-older teammate Solbjørk Minke Anderson took the bronze medal after she lost the sprint for silver to Cofidis' Amalie Dideriksen.
The fact that Minke Anderson, in just her second ever Danish Championship, takes third place is impressive enough in itself, but she was able to tell the press about an important detail afterwards that only makes the bronze medal even more remarkable:
– It happened right at the start, just when we had been sent off. The finish line had been rolled out, and there was a fold on one side. Rebecca (Koerner, ed.) and Alberte (Greve, ed.) just managed to get around it, but I rode right into it.
– I fall over the handlebars and land on my stomach. I have just been checked by a Samaritan and can confirm that I have compressed a rib. So it has been a bit of a long day, said the young rider, clearly feeling the pain after the Danish Championship race.
The route in Jutland was already tough with strong winds, many kilometers and steep hills, so a strained rib should equal a poor performance for most people – but not for the Uno-X rider.
However, it was far from easy for the 20-year-old to secure a top result with a rib that was not in optimal condition.
– It was really hard, I have to admit, and it was suddenly very far from home. I talked to Rebecca out there because I was in pain, that if it hurt too much, I had to stop.
– During the laps I was pumped with adrenaline, and it was through willpower and stubbornness that I completed, was the final conclusion from Sunday's bronze winner.
Rebecca Koerner from Uno-X also achieved a top position at the Danish Championships. She rounded out the top five and secured three out of the top five positions for Uno-X.
