Standings

Reactions: Blues in the bottle
The spreadsheet should now be fit for public release.

You'll see that I have included 2 tabs for Team similarity. The first, regarding how much of the budgets have been spent in the same way, has three instances of teams having spent more than 3000 on the same group of riders: Los Brolin and Madrazo matching each other's receipts to the extent of 3048, and both of them havin 3033 spent in the same way as I did (so they must both have Simon Carr).

The second is based simply on the number of riders held in common: Hfgon shares 6 riders with both Del1962 and Madrazo (and 7 with the Collective Wisdom group), while 5 rider overlaps are found between:
Amis Velo - Hfgon
Amis Velo - Leadbelly
Del - Madrazo
Hfgon -Los Brolin
Hfgon - Maglia Nera
Kazistuta - Titan
Los Brolin - Madrazo
and strangest of all, considering where they each are in the popularity table, Redhead Dane and Samu Cuenca.

Anyway, if you think you can make head or tail of my very inefficient Excel efforts, or if you reckon you can make interesting discoveries, the spreadsheet is on Google drive here, and hopefully I will remember to press save and update that each time I do an update. I might think to repeat the location occasionally, but if you will want to explore it, remember which post I have put the link in.

Yes, i was starting to get concerned that I had lost all concept on how to play this game.

Stage 3

I do like these mixed up top tens: Vingegaard/Gaudu/Ciccone, so it must be a mountainous stage; but Pedersen/Aular, so it's a hard sprint; but Labrosse/Koerdt, so ???

Many of the losses today may well prove to be temporary: they at least look dramatic. The teams without Vingegaard are the top 8 today.

Although the daily difference tables look bad for Vingegaard and those that picked him, those teams still hold the top 19 places.

Tomorrow each of our teams gets a bonus according to how wealthy the teams that employ out picks are.

Wasn't the Maglia Nera the jersey given to the guy last in the GC (of the Giro) back in the day?
So rather ironic that someone with that name know leads the game.
Indeed, and there were some quite legendary battles for the jersey. But I do also own a black jersey that I wear on rides quite often ;)

Don't worry, though, I think my chances of carrying the lead all the way to Madrid are about as slim as Gaudu's.

Stage 5
Team time trial

I'm not a big fan of these in a GT, partly for reasons discussed elsewhere on the forum today, but also because I had to include a whole set of extra steps in the spreadsheet, and because CQ's point allocation for them is questionable.

Green points

No 70 points for anyone today, nor any points for those who finished detached from their team's fourth man. Far more than 10 scorers, so I'm only posting those that were picked.

The first 26 places are occupied by the 26 Vingegaard teams.

That sort of total re-arrangement of the table is what we usually see on the first mountain stage. Tomorrow: the first mountain stage.

CQ normally give points to everyone on the winning team, right? So I expect a correction on their end to follow, which would require a recalculation here. There was a reason I picked Novak over Hirt...
Riders that get dropped don't get points. Here's the relevant section in the CQ rulebook :

In a team time trial the points on the scale will be awarded to the team. For the individual ranking, these points will be divided by 4 and rounded downwards. The points will be awarded to all riders classified in the time that counts for the team classification.

Exception: In the ProTour TTT in Eindhoven (2005-2007) and the World Championship Team Time Trial all riders who start receive points.

That's so stupid. I wish I'd known before submitting my team.

What's annoying is that even if Novak had been detached by just 2 seconds, and therefore finishing ahead of all of LidlTrek, he still gets no points. I guess CQ's defence would be that the lead-out man who is 11th in a sprint stage gets no points, no matter how helpful he was to his teammates efforts.

But I chose Novak over Hirt because I was more confident in him reaching Madrid and getting those 15 points.

Stage 6
Almost all the ten man break made the top ten

Green points
Breakaway stages are usually very hit and miss for green points, with some cheap team fillers hitting a jackpot.

A spread of more than 1000 points on the day is very very unusual: losses of 600 points plus are, I suspect, unprecedented in the years I have been doing these games .
