An interesting attack from Ewers here. Nice to see a bigger name try something. Movistar don't have to worry too much, but the other GC teams shouldn't hand her free time here.

Btw, i can't decide which shade of green is uglier, the one of the TdF point jersey or the one Cavalli has
I don't know why they've changed it. It was much prettier last year.

It looked like García was about to close the gap, but then AVV just accelerated like a moto and Mavi cracked.

Fem van Empel with her best road stage yet, good to see her in this group. Wanna see her sprint against Wiebes, but Vos also there so she's working.

I had hoped Ewers was able to take advantage of the mind games between ELB and AVV, but is she more to give, she left it too late in the sprint. But it's also a nice win for ELB, who's of course also improved her sprinting in recent years.

Longo-Borghini has usually suffered one average day in the Giro, but she could not get a better parcours to suit her characteristics.

Nice rides from ELB, Ewers, and Vleuty. Annemiek gave that elbow another scrape in her mini-crash earlier.

Peloton exploded on the first climb. After descending AVV, Realini, ELB and NFB 1,26 min ahead with 56,6 km to go.

Niedermaier, Cavalli, Persico, Magnaldi and Labous close to making the junction.

Rest of the doms and secondary contenders now two and a half minutes back. The dream that Cille's season was turning around may have died. Interestingly Patiño appears to be the only Movistar rider in that group so Annemiek will still be somewhat isolated but the likes of García and Santestebán, pretty strong climbers, are there too, along with some youngsters like Vas and Fem van Empel.

Gaia Realini remains epically cool.

Edit: junction made between groups 1 and 2. Labous attacking.

Last year the plan was that Marta would lead the Giro and Cille the Tour, so if that's also the case this year, she might purposely be a bit off her best. That said, Marta could very well be their best shot in the Tour as well, just like she might have been last year without the crash

Strong attack by Niedermaier here, but she'll probably need a good deal of time to be able hold on over Sant'Ignazio.
