There is a difference, he got caught behind a break because he was too far back.

Maybe he took is easy the first time. To get back on the flat afterwards... Idk. Caught a second wind. Then heard they had almost 50 seconds going into the climb. Knew he had a chance. Sometimes thats all you need to dig really deep. Favorites too passive on the climb.

Why would he be hanging at the very back of the peloton all the way up if he had these legs the first time?
