I think Greg Van Avarmaet or even Peter Sagan could beat him in the sprint.

Initially I thought ACF was being ridiculous when he said that GVA could win Amstel but looking at how he has developed this season it looks possible.

By "sprint" I mean the entire Cauberg...

Yes, so do I. Perhaps ACF has brainwashed me but GVA has looked really solid in the hills this year and if he can stay on Gilbert's wheel then he could be able to pass him in the final meters. Not likely, but possible.

With the old route finishing in Maastricht guys like Van Avermaet, Sagan and even Freire could beat him in the sprint, but not on the Cauberg, there is no faster hill-sprinter than Gilbert (unless it gets too steep).

There will be no repeat of LBL 2010. No Cuddles, no Berti, no Piti. Schlecks and Katusha will be the biggest threats

Neither Sagan or Van Avermaet have shown a lot on "Gilbert climbs". In fact, I wouldn't put those two ahead of others like Cunego, Di Luca, Frank and Andy (on their day), Visconti.

Yet there is still a clear difference in Gilbert's abilities and those names, he is simply the fastest man in the world on climbs like the Cauberg once he puts the hammer down. No one has been able to match his accelerations in the past 12 months and I see no reason for it to change on Sunday.

could Gilbert be facing the Cancellara dilemma?

Nop cuz Gilbert wouldn't go to a team car to whine for help or just sit up in sign of frustration...

I think Il Principe, Vino, Di Luca and Visconti would like to have some words with you...

LOL? Maybe Sagan hasn't shown anything but Greg yes... right now I'd put Greg over Di Luca and the Schlecks but a bit behind Il Principe...

Have any of the AG2R team any chance, would be ironic if someone from AG2R won AGR.

Nocentini (if hes riding) and Roche have a chance but both are small chances.

Though if you mix Gadrets Giro 2010 climbing with his Pais Vasco 2011 sprint, you would in theory get a Gilbert like contender.

i guess there are huge chances to see cancellara fly away before cauberg.some katusha(kolobnev or ivanov, not di luca beacause he will be the last card) and vino will follow him.gilbert needs to be very carefull.this won't be easy like in 2010 when alejandro wasn't there and cunego form was poor.

also interesting to see if visconti has fully recovered.

While Gilbert is the top favorite, I don't think he is as far above the rest as Cancellara in the cobbled classics is.
And even he didn't win.
So why Gilbert winning is so unbelievably certain according to some people here, is not so clear to me

Some extracts from the latest interview with Fränk Schleck about AGR:

"Amstel is the most difficult of the Ardennes Classics to win (French)"

"In the last 100km, you can never be further down than 40th. Of course, as the race goes on, this becomes more and more difficult - it's a race by elimination".

"It's good to have Fabian (Cancellara) for the order of the DS's in the line of team cars. A small detail like that can change a lot. From all we've seen, Fabian has the strength to win Amstel. Whatever happens, I think he will be able, at the very least, to help us a lot".

"Like every year, I can see a group of 10-15 riders go away in the last 30 km. The ideal scenario is to attack before the Cauberg, like I did it."

"Gilbert is very, very strong. Impressive. But I think Amstel suits him better than Liège, which remains his big objective. What impresses me is his capacity to keep his form - he's a great rider."

Q: You have already mentioned Gilbert. Who are your other favourites?
A: Sanchez, Cunego, Vinokourov, Gesink, Kolobnev.
Q: What about Freire?
A: In past years I've named him as a favourite and he hasn't won. I don't think he can do it, but that can change. If he's at the bottom of the Cauberg, watch out ...
Q: And Ivanov?
A: We haven't seen him much lately, so I don't think so. But I could be wrong. That's cycling.

It looks like the GVA camp is rapidly becoming huge. ACF magic I guess, he's a real fairy alright. ;)

I'm wondering, do people in Holland really care about AGR? I mean is it a big day for the Dutch or do most people not even realize it's going on?

And also: "how high do the Dutch people on this forum rate the Gold Race"?

Chris Horner is not shown as starting on either the Radio Shack website or the official race website. Is he taking part?

They do care, the 'gelegenheidsvolgers' know only of the Tour, the Amstel Gold Race, and maybe some of the monuments (Paris Roubaix, Flanders).

Take what Gesink said in the newspapers: "Besides the Tour de France, I get asked about the Amstel Gold Race the most from journalists"

There's definately a lot of people coming to the race, ofcourse not comparable to Flanders standards, but for Dutch people, who are not such big cycling fans, still very high.

Yeah, I read this, hence the question. I was also wondering how important the race is to the dutch guys on the forum.
