Talansky (2) - Quintana (1) - Pantano (3)

Can't wait to see these guys riding in the big races which are actually on television. For example the TdF... I imagine Conti and Schleck attacking eachother on the Alpe d'Huez and then this little guy Quintana says " hello " and they can only watch him ride away.

Ah this is me dreaming. I've always had a weak for Colombian climbers and I miss them. Them is colombian climbers reach top3 in MTF stages.

After some search now I know who picked Talansky:
If you call that "picking Talansky", you're an equally creative reader as our two Dutch-Colombian friends DAOTEC and Ryo. I just said this Talansky is a better climber than these guys thought, and I guess the fact that he got 2nd in this Tour de l'Avenir more than proves my point.

Please enlighten me on Colombian tactics. Why did they send Pantano, their best guy on GC, for the mountain points? Now they have Quintano in the lead with only 20 secs advantage. Not that I think he won't take the overall, but they could have had a more comfortable lead by now.

His lead was thanks to tactics more than anything else, so this was to be expected. Didn't think he'd lose 4 minutes though.

it's very simple the colombians tried to take kom as for them that is one of most importanr prizes

besides quintana before avenir started said in an interview that if he was going to be leader or close to it before the final itt no one would stand a chance against him and he was right to say the least. this guy is from 1990!!

I never said talansky wasn't a good climber. I know he did top ten in aosta so I knew he was good but the rest of the americans and especially british failed big time. I reallyw onder where sky thinks they are going to find a british tourwinner

Chris Butler also finished in the top 20.

While that may not be incredible compared to other countries... by US standards it's solid. While Tejay Van Garderen and Stetina were up high the last couple of years, it's not like the US normally does any better then 1-2 guys in the top 20 with a stage win or two. This year was pretty much on target... with the additional benefit of having a guy on the podium. I think it was a solid performance for the US.

Solid...

FOR THE US.

We aren't a cycling nation. A "good" performance in this race for us is a top 10 finish, 2-3 in the top 20 and a stage win or two.

This isn't basketball... we aren't SUPPOSED to win something like this.

If you look at the CQ rankings for the last 10 years, the US is consistently around 7th-10th place. We got as high as 4th in 2005, but in general we don't have the quantity of cycling talent of other nations.

Same goes for this race. We have a very good climbing talent, and a good flat/prologue talent. We got a stage win, a couple of good finishes in mountain stages and a 2nd in the GC.

For the US... that is solid.

For Columbia or Spain it would have sucked... for Belarus it would have been awesome... but for the US it was solid.

Tejay did come 2nd last year to you know ;)

Anyway being good in youth doesn't always materialize into the pro ranks (some who don't perform here, go on to great things also...), following the progress of this talented field will be interesting though.

Timmy, haven't you gotten the memo? We, the Dutch have annexed him :p

But a great ride by some of the Dutch talents, and off course by the Colombians, although it is a shame we probably won't see too much of the latter over in Europe

I honestly don't understand the constant cheap shots at the US riders and especially at Phinney.

We aren't a cycling nation ? what a transatalantic BS again, is a record 7 times winning the TdF in a row not enough, and all them 100's other victories of the last decade, under which cycling we know now afterwards, collapsed !

You know where I stand? Sure doesn't look like it, considering whenever I make a post you reply to something that is only in your imagination.

But I guess we all know where you stand.

Agreed, the cheap shots overall are getting ridiculous, and the misunderstanding of posts is even more ridiculous.

So what? Here's a TT specialist who crashed badly, was put dead last in the GC and instead of abandoning stayed in the race to help his team leader Talansky. And despite all the pressure everybody seems to put on this guy, he took it lightly, joked about it and just kept doing his part. To me that says a lot of good things about his mentality. I'm baffled that anyone could take it any other way unless they were trying their best to take cheap shots at US riders, like you are.

Also, you realize Alex Howes finished 90th, just above Phinney, and that he was joking, right?

You know what? I think we'll hear more of Taylor Phinney in the future than of Nairo Quintana. Just a hunch.

Also: you get your smilies from jongeren-forum.nl? Bwahahahaa!

13.09.1910 / 10:03 a.m. | Barcelona

The flamboyant champion of the Tour de l'Avenir, Nairo Quintana Rojas and his team mates of Colombia is Passion - Café de Colombia-472 are now in Spain, more exactly in Barcelona, where they will spend Monday night and prepare themselfs to take a flight with Avianca to bring them back to Colombia to reach Bogota at 9pm on tomorrow, that is [14:00 European time].

A National delegation has traveled specialy to the Catalan capital Barcelona to take the flight home with the National team, that won the most important title of the worlds cycling stage races for riders under 23 years. For them it is the task to become big stars in international elite cycling hereafter.

Nairo Petito ROJAS said to www.revistamundociclistico.com from Spain, that "We are all wanting to get to Colombia, to embrace our families and enjoy the victory. I appreciate the phonecall that was made by the president Juan Manuel Santos, and hopefully the president will continue with the government supporting young riders in the poorest regions of the country "

Asked about the reaction of their rivals, Quintana Rojas said: "I think they were a little upset, especially the French, who had two teams. The French have not even greeted us one time, but to us, it does not worry us because we worked hard to get this new triumph for Colombia".

A few cyclists do not make you a cycling nation.

We had a thread a while back listing the 10 best riders from peoples respective countries of all time. The US team started great with guys like Lemond and Armstrong... but then quickly faded to the point that someone like George Hincapie was in the top 10 of all time for most lists.

Of ALL TIME.

No... the US is NOT a cycling nation. We are a football/basketball/baseball nation that has produced maybe 3 cyclists that would touch the top 10 lists from countries like Spain, Italy, Belgium or France.
