53rd Amstel Gold Race - 260km

Last year BMC made it a really selective race by riding really hard on the front for a long time before the decisive climbs. As it turned out it backfired because GVA couldn't go with the resulting selection. I wonder if this year they will only start to ride after the key climbs and hope they can bring it back for GVA to contest a group sprint where he can be hard to beat after 250+ kms

I fear that this will be a more conservative edition of Amstel compared to last year.

Yep. They wont catch the break before the important hill sector, that will change the race.

Not sure if there is enough wind.
Yeah. Last year, the big guns attacked on Kruisberg. This year, they will wait for much longer. Some of the lieutenants will be used instead.

The climbs after Kruisberg/Eyserbosweg/Keutenberg are too soft to drop the Sagan, Matthews and Colbrelli. Even Coquard could be a factor if they don't use the early hills wisely.

Cunego crashed apparently. Sad way to end your international career.

Younger than Valverde and by the end 2008, his last great year with a much better palmares than Bala.

By the end of 2008:

Cunego: 35 wins, 1x Giro, 3x Lombardia, Amstel, WC silver, 4 Giro stages,
Valverde: 52 wins, 2x Vuelta podiums, 2x Liege, Fleche, San Sebastian, 3x WC medals, 8 GT stages

Cunego maybe better, but not by much...

4 big wins versus 2 big wins, the difference was enormous.
