This story has only had 56 posts in another thread. A lot of people, especially in the media, have treated Contador's 50 picogram positive for Clenbuterol like the biggest doping scandal in the history of the world. But no one seems to care that it's possible up to seven Mexican soccer players who had Clenbuterol in their May 21 tests are playing in the Gold Cup Championship against the U.S.
The Mexican Football Federation tested 14 members of this particular team at the High Performance Center. The players came from different club teams around the world. All ate at the dining hall. After the first round of the Cup, the Mexican Federation announced they'd gotten results from the UCLA Lab, and that five players were being pulled from the tourney as in investigation began.
Within 24 hours, the Federation had hired John-Louis Dupont, one of Contador's lawyers who gets credit for bringing free agency to soccer via CAS. The President of Mexico declared it must have been contamination. A Notary Public went to the Performance Center and documented meat samples to be tested. The five players flew across the country to Los Angeles the next day to have a follow up test. All later came back negative.
No positives were reported later when the results of Under 17 and Under 22 players came back, or in the women's team, which had been on the road on May 21.
An enterprising journo managed to get the Clenbuterol levels of the five faxed to him by the UCLA Lab. That angered some people. The players were back at UCLA the following week to have their B Samples opened. No results have been announced. The Mexican Federation got permission from FIFA to replace the five players in the tournament, since it was probably an accident that caused the positives, not cheating. The fllod gates opened on stories by experts saying things like half of the meat consumed in their state had Clenbuterol, etc.
Last weekend a journalist named Rafael Ocampo wrote that he had spoken to an anonymous team manager in the know, who told him that not just five, but twelve of the fourteen athletes tested that day had Clenbuterol in their system. He was told that the seven had levels below .5 Nanograms (500 Picograms), which "isn't considered doping". Mr. Ocampo also told the story on television.
A reporter for ESPN, José Ramón Fernández, said on Twitter that he had a reliable source saying that there had been twelve soccer players with Clenbuterol.
A day or two later, Héctor González, denied that there were seven more positives (but keep in mind, someone decided that less than .5 Ng ISN'T a positive.

The journos gave up the fight. Then Sepp Blatter, the President of FIFa, came to town and spoke on camera with ESPN. He said that they had received all the paperwork from the Federation, and was surprised to see that besides the five, there were other members of the same team with traces of Clenbuterol in their system. That story spread quickly.
Today he sent a spokesperson to say that people had misunderstood what he had said (on camera) to ESPN, and that he didn't mean there were more players on that team with Clenbuterol, but he was talking about other players (who have never been mentioned in the press for Clenbuterol?)
The journos are back to calling B.S., saying Blatter is up to his usual lies. If the story about the seven is true, Mexico should have had to play their second and other rounds with ten or eleven players, but now they're in the finals. I've relied on Google Translate for pretty much everything I've read, but one article this morning seemed to say that WADA wasn't involved because this was an out of competition test paid for by the Federation itself, and since they were the customer, they were the ones who got the results.
WADA has been in communication with FIFA. It's going to be really interesting to see how this plays out, especially since word of the positives came out at the time it was suggested that WADA would discuss a Minimum Threshold for Clenbuterol.
