Better than expected: Vlasov, Rodriguez & Tolhoek.
Worse than expected: Sivakov, Ayuso & Ciccone and basically every GC rider still not on the sheet.

Ardila didn't start?

I don't know why but I find myself cheering for Remco. Anyway, good start. You want to start good to build up your confidence again (not that he needs it).
I think i know why.

Great ride today. Awesome to see Evenepoel back in business. Such a fun rider!
@F_Cance doesn't agree :laughing:

Ciccone being clearly weaker than Atwan is a bit of a surprise for me, but it's the first race of the season.

remco is an exciting rider.

the fact that he has no finishing sprint makes him arguably even more exciting because the whole world knows he will have to drop everyone to win...and he still does.

this was a signature remco attack: just as everyone have exhausted themselves attacking, he bursts out and then TTs (reminiscent of poland stage win and others). I think it feeds the narrative of the "fans"/haters who complain that no one is "trying". That is because they already have and are at their absolute limit.

side note:

don't think ayuso was disappointing at all.

19 years old (first pro race, no?)

only a minute back.

Lol Ayuso disappointing. You guys are unreal.
Personally i didn't say he was disappointing. I said worse than expected, there's a big difference imho. It was the first stage, rather short after the winterbreak and you would expect him to be very motivated to show himself. The final climb was short and not very steep. I wouldn't even say it was disappointing if he lost 5 minutes. But i did expect him to be slightly better than someone like Honoré or Tolhoek. Granted, both of them did better than i would have expected as well.

Great start of the season for Remco. He has really become a master of timing his attack to perfection, so it becomes a one and done. One big acceleration is enough and everybody is beaten. I'm surprised Valverde didn't even try to follow. Probably wasn't strong enough. Vlasov also very good.

Edit:
I'm curious to see what impact Remco's attack would have in a bigger race with stronger teams and against the biggest GC stars. But we've come to the point where I'd back him in a short stage race against anybody but the Slovenian superstar duo. And even against them under the right circumstances, I wouldn't be shocked if he wins.

Yeah, I am almost lost for words...

Top 10 or thereabouts in this race would be a very good start to the season and something to build on.

It is a decent field in this race.
