Wow, that looked impressively easy! Don't the Portugese peloton employ any hillstrong sprinters?

They had, i remember with Sergio Ribeiro and Candido Barbosa.

Not since Candido Barbosa retired and Sérgio Ribeiro was suspended.
Edit: Arredondo is right.

Filipe Cardoso is pretty useful at getting over hills for the sprint but spent 2011-12 leading out Ribeiro and last year had no support in the Efapel team which was stacked with GC men so his sprint isn't quite what it was a few years ago.

Yeah he's pretty good but not on the same level of those two.

Well, most people learning to be durable sprinters in Portugal have basically been fighting over who gets to be beaten by Cândido for most of the last 15 years, so it's not surprising that few young riders have developed in that direction I guess. Those that are pretty good at that aren't in Portugal at the moment - guys like Fabio Silvestre. Remember there's also Marco Coelho, another casualty of the Liberty Seguros Generation III fiasco (along with Vitor Rodrigues, one of the most interesting talents Portugal has had recently, but he wasn't a durable sprinter), and also Bruno Neves was not too dissimilar from that type of rider before his death in 2008.

GC after stage 2:

3 (3) SANCHEZ Luis Leon (Caja Rural - Seguros RGA) ,,
4 (5) PINTO Edgar (LA Aluminios - Antarte) 0:15
5 (7) SOUSA Sérgio (Efapel - Glassdrive) 0:17
6 (9) FERNANDEZ CRUZ Delio (OFM - Quinta da Lixa) 0:20

8 (11) VILELA Ricardo (OFM - Quinta da Lixa) 0:22
9 (12) BRANDÃO Joni (Efapel - Glassdrive) 0:24
10 (13) SILVA Daniel (Rádio Popular) 0:28

Yeah Bruno Neves was that kind of rider and definitely had some class; Fabio Silvestre doesn't really convinced me yet has a sprinter so I don't see him as a better sprinter than Filipe Cardoso.
Vítor Rodrigues would have a pretty decent GC rider / climber but I guess he was tired of paying to ride bikes. It's a shame he retired so early and that's one of the reasons why I want every other decent young portuguese rider to go out to international teams.
At this point, I think António Carvalho is one of the bets for that role although he has some big shoes to fill.

Tomorrow our first MTF: Serra do Larouco, something like 10km @ 5.5%. Should be fun.

Yea, and even though there's only one climb fit for GC attacks (Larouco itself), the constant false flat all the way up to Montalegre should grind some legs. Definitely not an easy ride. I'm going with Rui Sousa.

Profile reminder. There will be some showers, apparently.

Riders much further down than that are only likely to be involved in the event of a breakaway, I would wager. Obviously not all of these are going to be protagonists here, but today ought to give us a strong idea of who can contend and who can't.

Apparently, Gondomar will back a professional cycling team next year. Former professional Paulo Ferreira is involved in the project although no riders are confirmed yet.

Great!! Another new team that most likely won't pay their riders

I would rather have 3 decent teams with up to the date salaries and good racing schedules all year round than what we currently have. Which is like 5/6 crappy budget teams months behind on salaries and racing 2 months per year.

Anyway Larouco isn't too hard. Expect a small group sprint. The gaps were pretty big on the Volta do Futuro but that is because Ruben Guerreiro, despite only being 20, is light years ahead of every u23 rider in portugal and no top u23 were in the race.

In another news Portugal is going to L'Avennir and Ruben Guerreiro will try to be in top shape there  You know what to do Rui, take Ruben, Frederico and Nuno Bico to lampre now!! :p
