Obviously it was a mistake but I have to commend Wout for completely owning it. He said he wanted to win and was afraid he'd find himself in a situation where he couldn't go for the victory, presumably because it could have been Benoot or Jorgenson up ahead and he'd have to just sit on Powless' wheel. Not great but at least he admitted he was being selfish.

Brennan would have destroyed all 4 of those guys.
Not sure about that. NP was in a front break and managed to not only stay with the JV guys; he provided power when needed. Well deserved win from the strongest guy in that situation. He'll never get that leverage again.
As for JV: violated sprint setup 101: lead out guy keeps drilling until they see their teammates' wheel passing. Guy in front of Powless should have accelerated enough to take him off line, too. Academic as WvA and his legs parted company 100 meters from the finish. He was an as*hole and a half if he was my selfish teammate.

A couple of my riding buddies, rode with his wife and mom last year, at his Fondo in Auburn. They said they were some of the nicest people they've ever met. I've never ridden with him when he's in town, but everyone I know who has, says he is also a truly nice guy.
My Powless story that I’ve put here a couple times; We were at a Tour stage start last year, next to the EF caravan, and Neilson spotted an acquaintance standing next to us. He came over to the barriers and had a loooong chat with them, minutes before the race, and afterward my wife, who overheard the whole conversation, said “he is probably the nicest young man I could ever imagine meeting.”

Powless' comment about this being the biggest win of his life was interesting, given his San Sebastian win. Goes to show the importance to classics riders of this time of the year.

Sure. Not to mention, the actual quote is: "with the way the race played out and the people that were starting today, this definitely feels like the most accomplished victory I've had yet".

Also, as per ef's instagram feed, Powless did 920w for 20 seconds at 67kg bw (as per google) which is not at all shabby for a fatigued sprint. Certainly not something a Felix Gall can pull off. So let's give him some credit here.

I wasn‘t able to watch but it looks like QS took Stannard with them to the line.
Difference being qs actually attacked stannard. Vlab didn't bother because they didn't want to accidentally let someone else win besides wout. So basically wout lacks not only legs and brains but also heart (for his teammates).

Also who let vlab ride off the front? Looks to me like mads was out of position and Kung just dropped the ball.

Watch a lot of interviews in a lot of sports. This is about as brutally honest as you see an athlete get and kudos to Wout for taking the blame. We can't fully contemplate how it is to be in his shoes. When he talks about how important it was for him to win today, it tells you how much pressure he feels to deliver, and his body wasn't capable. Very human moment.
