At the bottom in the users online space, why do i have a fellow* next to my name and why do some posters have a fellow+ ?

I guess because you are in stealth mode... which sort of defeats the point of stealth mode :S

Hey I just tried to take the test "is she hot or not" in one of the ads:

http://www.chacha.com/topic/sex-life/quiz/636/5941/is-she-hot-or-not

When I answer at the bottom and hit next, it just goes back to the same page. I clicked on "hot" on the first chick and it sent me back, so I thought it was the wrong answer and clicked "not". The same thing happened. This is causing me much irritation.

Can somebody at CN please look into this? If you guys are gonna put these types of things here for us to play with, you should not jerk us around. Thanks.

Just discovered a very nice add on.. Ghostery

on every page it scans and shows a pop up list of all advertising networks, tracking cookies and every intrusive peice of code and you can then choose what you want to block and what you dont.

CN brings up 16 entries, including 6 advertising networks and several tracking cookies.

firefox plugin https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ghostery/
opera extension https://addons.opera.com/en/addons/extensions/details/ghostery/0.9.5/?display=en

i haven't contributed in a while. in principle, i am not against the ads. however, they became so obtrusive that i stopped posting have been staying out of the forum.

i just got ghostery, too. it works great. the forum looks great now. unfortunately for cyclingnews, their decision to lard the forum with ads has cost them money in my case, as i get zero ads now and i pretty much stay out of the forum, which in turn means i spend much less time at this site.

Count me among them. Opera browser with CN.com site prefs set to disable plugins and inline frames. Problem solved.

which comes back to the original gripe that large sites overdoing the ads and encouraging people to use adblockers hurts the smaller sites that use advertising wisely and depend on the revenue.

30$ a month lost doesnt hurt cn, but on a small site it can be the difference between the site paying for itself and the webmaster having to go in their own pocket.

On the plus side this whole discussion has raised peoples awareness about that issue and I now know lots of people who when they visit a site they appreciate that they know is advertising dependant will now click an ad in support of that site.

If the "smaller site" can't deal with the ad hit count loss then they don't shouldn't be on-line to begin with. Most quality sites have existed for years with no ads all with the members pitching in, relying on the ad BS is just that BS, its not like people going to a site actually buy what the hock on the side bar.

The popularity of ad-blockers is so good those seeking the ad clicks will hopefully die off like the dodo bird.

i never thought of that. fortunately, i think my adblocker allows unfiltering of specific sites.

So somone who publicly patted himself on the back for using an ad blocker ends up running a forum and complaining about the use of ad blockers. Karma is a b!tch.

He "patted himself on the back" for the - in my opinion, entirely appropriate first-use of ad blocking software to get rid of the ridiculous and incredibly ill-conceived implementation of ad-click cropping performed by the owners of CyclingNews (note, the owners - not the editors or moderators, etc). None of us were using such blocking software before the ads were inflicted upon us.

He spent his own time and effort to build a standalone forum that is paid for and run by the members. Members there are entirely happy with the level of ads and their opinion is taken into consideration on any changes to the site. Changes based upon member suggestions are typically agreed and implemented within 24hours. Members who are happily posting this very minute and enjoying discussing cycling with friendly banter and no agressive trolling nor interventions by moderators. Members who nolonger spend much time at all on CN forums...

Yes, Karma is a B!tch.

Trolling for members, the low hit count forum owner's only tactic to keeping it afloat.

Dim did. Right from the beginning.

I've had them since their invention. Ad-blockers not only let one concentrate on the subject one wants to read but is also green, just look at your CPU load with and without those pesky ad's. You laptop owners who keep seeing your battery go dead might want to look into it for that factor alone.
