AG Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne: Two One-Day Races Pretending to be a Three-Day Race (20th and 21st Oct.)

Right, everyone; it's time! Time for the fastest ridden "three-day" race on the calendar; the abtly named one-day race "Three Days of De Panne".

Now, just to clarify, it was in fact a three-day race until 2017. However, funding issues meant that it was squashed down to just one day from 2018. Then, in order to maintain the illusion that they do in fact know how to count, the organisers added a women's race, held - rather unusually - on a separate day from the men's race. (I think there's also a sportive, but I suspect that would've been cancelled this year anyway.)

I suspect it boils down to the organisers. The organisers for this race - KVC Panne Sportief - decided to host the race, whereas the organisers for E3 - Hand in Hand VZW - decided not to.
As for why Flanders Classics decided to how Scheldeprijs, but not Dwars; well... I have no idea.

3 Days of De Panne was a very nice appetizer for Flanders and Paris-Roubaix until they ruined it. Especially in 2017 when Gilbert won it and would go on to ace Flanders! Together with the opening weekend of Omloop & Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne the 3 Days of De Panne always built a triumvirate of small but honorable Belgian races. Hincapie won it in the past and was very happy about it.

Still scandalous UCI granted to kill this beautiful race in order to place Across Flanders more prominently. Especially since this season shows which race is more meaningful and actually held!

Last classic of the year. I'm going to watch on principle!

This is the forecast for tomorrow in Belgium. Lots of wind to be expected but it should be dry in the afternoon.

Unfortunately this means a (cross)headwind for most part of the race and for 'De Moeren' as well. Let's hope the wind direction changes enough to west-southwest in the afternoon.
