During the recent Route du Sud stage race, which Contador won ahead of Quintana, he revealed that his “legs were still hurting [from the Giro] until a couple of days ago. He said: “It was a very demanding race, particularly the last week. but in the last few days, the pain has finally gone and that motivates me even more.]”

Couple of days , last few days... good. This means he is full recovered at last one week.

Why are there only eight riders?

My guess is all 9 are there, but the 9th rider is obstructed (see gap between 1st and "3rd" rider) off to the left of the photo.

EDIT: maybe not. i only see 8 shadows.... G-d I wish the tour would hurry up and start. We're analyzing every little thing to death :p

because the ninth rider is out of camera range.

anyone thinks that Sagan will leave TS? From Oleg blog sounds like they talked, but there's no more love there anymore. Right now, they are just being professional since both has a contract. But 3 years is a long time to live under Oleg..

It was suggested that he wasn't happy and might leave team before the end of his contract. The truth is that we both have a contract that we have to respect but everything is possible. We'll see what happens after the Tour de France. (?)

so this will be interesting for Sagan's quest for green jersey. Sounded like they have to talk it over before saturday. I hope, there won't be drama like cav/wiggin. The last thing TS need is a polemic.
The truth is that it's not a simple goal to manage. We can all remember the Wiggins-Cavendish soap opera in 2012 and we don't want that in our team. We have a different atmosphere and discipline, so we might only go for one jersey and the yellow jersey is definitely the first goal. Peter knows that. Perhaps he can win the green jersey while helping Alberto win yellow, that would be the best outcome. We'll have a meeting just before the start with Peter, Alberto, myself and the directeur sportif Sean Yates and Steven De Jongh. We'll sit down and talk eye to eye and decide our plans. It won't be a problem.

I think it is Tinkov who will not stay around for 3 years, just my feeling about the situation. In many interviews lately where they asked him about how it is to own a cycling team he has on several occasions said its very very expensive (more so than he thought) and after the new financial situtation in russia he was also asked if it would influence him beeing a owner of tinkov saxo cycling team and how long he planned to keep owning it he said '' I dont know we will have to see'' again or something like that.

Again this is just what I feel and may very well be wrong and stupid but if not indeed Sagan staying for 3 years (if hes unhappy) we dont even know that tho, would be a long time. This is so speculative at this point on every part (atleast from my part)of the case that its just not worth almost making up some ideas around the matter :p

good insight from the horse mouth. Interview with Contador.

In the Dauphiné, Froome was seen to be isolated, without teammates, in one stage. Is the epoch in which just one team could control the race over?
Yes and no. Astana had a good train in the Giro, although luckily it didn´t work out for them. Everything is relative. The Dauphiné stage was a complicated day and I don’t know what Sky was thinking. One thing is clear: you can’t focus on watts, reducing it to watts per kilo and how long you can maintain it on a climb. There are a lot of other factors: the weather, in every sense: rain, snow, sun, mist, cold… And then, the course and the race situation: A time trial could take its toll on the following day; the day after a rest day it might be hard for some people to re-start… You have to put everything on the balance, arrive in optimal performance condiition, and choose among whatever tactical possibilites are under consideration.
