By all due respect, even Ten Dam's and Bauke Mollema's form is better than Bertie's form right now. Pretty depressing to see.....

For many people it's sad to see him struggle when he used to dance away from everyone.

That happen to everyone Flo;)

Right now the most plausible scenario is a top 10. I can't believe the 3rd week fairytale

I'm getting used to it, weird but true. Whenever i see him race i just hope he can hang on.

I used to think it was a bad sign that Contador won a MTF with only a lead of 10 sec

The good old days :(

Then why didn't he let Kreuziger ride? Besides many guys were able to follow Froome today, not just Contador.

Contador was still 7th yesterday, he wasn't gonna drop if the likes of AS didn't drop

I think he feared to stay alone there and maybe lose some time if others reacted to Kreuziger. He didn't look very good today, but better than tomorrow. And always mechanical can happen.

I did and I believe now too:).He is a real fighter.:)

+1
look what the silverlining of today.
sky lost kiryenka and porte was out of contention. But Saxo to me is the winner of today's situation. Even though Garmin and Movistar were instrumental to drop porte and because of the speed, kiryenka finished outside the time limit. However, when the dust is settled, with a weaker contador, the rest of the field "couldn't drop" him. He was still hanging there like a tissue stuck on your shoes. What a waste opportunity. That might bite them back in the third week. This also shows that contador is a fighter and is riding smart to not bleed more time. Hats off to Kreuziger too. He is trully a team player.

It's just so early :(

Indeed, but he has been brilliant for 6 years, it is the average lifespan at the top.

He will give us some shows yet I believe but this TdF is not for him I fear :( He has been riding on pure class, not form, all season.

Maybe he will come good again at some point and we will be treated to the old brilliance at least briefly.

A few months back I said I hadn't seen the indicators for the inevitable decline. Yesterday I saw it :(

I pray I am wrong, but I've watched this sport for over 40 years. They blaze across the sky in glory and make our hearts sing with their deeds of valor. But they all burn out and we are left with the memories of their deeds and panache. It is the way of cycling, it has always been so.

Yes it is very sad....

Look at the guy in 2nd place on gc right now. What;) happened to him, how is he riding now and when did he rise to the top?

Valverde is a very good cyclist, but never entered the realm of great. He has 1 GT win. Same with Cadel, still hanging around, was never a great.

Alberto has 7 (or 5) and is a winner of all 3 GTs a Very Select group. The greats burn out differently than the very goods. One day the brilliance that made them great is gone as if a light has been switched off and only briefly shows again.

I know carol :( It's just so sad... and I feel like I haven't seen much at all of him yet :( it makes me sad :(

It makes me weep, just as I have wept for the others that stole my heart with their unbelievable feats. They are cycling's select few, those who reached for the stars and entered the realm of legend.

No matter what happens from here on out Alberto belongs in that company.

THIS race is not over yet. He is not done charming us YET!:)

My personal theory: he had a messed preparation earlier this year. Riding very soon in January, without proper base training which didn't allow him to build form in the next races. Eventually he fade as he raced more.

Bottom line: he'll kill every life in GT's next year :D

You are right Carol :)

I guess we should remember the good times and cherish the good moments we still get.

What happened Roche today, saw that he came in with the grupetto and is now over 30 minutes down. Not that that is any major relevance as he has no interest in gc, but im curious did he just blow or did he just pull up in order to spare his legs for further down the line. Sean Kelly has always been adamant that he should just lose 30 mins to get some leeway to get into a break and go for a stage. Seeing Dan perform today has to act as a motivation going forward.

:D I hope so. Either way this is a lost year. Sad.

This is a possibility, maybe the light is just banked and not flipped off yet.

Even without the brilliance he can still win GTs, just needs the right parcours and level of competition. He has the race savvy and attitude to win while not being at his former glory.
